UPDATE Virgin Media Prep Firmware Fix for SuperHub 3 Latency and Packet Loss

A nasty Intel Puma 6 chipset (x86 SoC) bug, which has caused latency spikes and packet loss for owners of Virgin Media’s latest SuperHub 3 (ARRIS TG2492S/CE) cable broadband router in the United Kingdom, will soon be patched by a new firmware release.

BT Group Appoints New Chairman Jan du Plessis to Replace Sir Mike Rake

Last year BT revealed that its Chairman, Sir Mike Rake, had agreed to stay on until “at least” September 2017 and in the meantime the UK telecoms giant has been hunting for a replacement, which they appear to have found in the shape of Jan du Plessis (Chairman of mining firm Rio Tinto).

The Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, has today given his first major Budget 2017 speech and announced several improvements for broadband connectivity in the United Kingdom, including boosts for 5G Mobile and another £200m for “full-fibre” (FTTH/P) networks.

Q4 2016 – Average World Internet Speeds Top 7Mbps as UK Rises to 16.3Mbps

Akamai has published their final ‘State of the Internet’ report for 2016 (Q4), which reveals that the global average fixed line broadband download speed is now 7Mbps (up 12% from 6.3Mbps in Q3) vs 16.3Mbps in the United Kingdom (up 10% from 14.9Mbps). The UK’s country ranking also climbed to 16th.

Inmarsat’s plan to improve broadband connectivity on aircraft appears to have taken a hit today after rival Satellite operator ViaSat accused the London-based ISP of “misusing spectrum” and gaining an “unfair competitive advantage” by “creating a monopoly for European in-flight connectivity.”

UK ISP Plusnet Shaves a Few More £ off their “Fibre Broadband” Prices

Budget ISP Plusnet has further reduced the price of their unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages today, with their ‘up to’ 38Mbps service being cut to £25 a month for 18 months (£32.98 thereafter) and their 76Mbps option dropping to £30 for the same period (£37.98 thereafter).

Trouble in Edinburgh as CityFibre Contractor KNNS Slapped for Unsafe Work

Cityfibre has suspended one of their civil works contractors, KNNS, in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland). The action occurred after a dashcam video emerged that showed one of their fibre optic engineers sitting exposed in a manhole on a busy 30MPH street, with only two small traffic cones for protection.

Superfast Broadband Coming to 3,000 Extra Worcestershire UK Premises

Matt Warman MP Attacks ISPs for Advertising Misleading Broadband Speeds

The Conservative MP for Boston and Skegness, Matt Warman, has accused ISPs of being “complicit in fraud” for the way they advertise broadband speeds in the United Kingdom and has called a Westminster Hall event to debate the issue at 4.30pm tomorrow. He also wants “fibre” to only mean FTTP/H ISPs.

UK Fixed Superfast Broadband Coverage Improves to 92.5% (Q1 2017)

The latest independently calculated coverage data has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to order at 92.5% of homes and businesses across the United Kingdom. Plus “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) services are available to 51.2%.

Business Broadband ISP Metronet UK Gobbles Venus’s London Fibre Network

Metronet UK, which has built its own hybrid fibre optic and wireless data network in several urban areas around the United Kingdom, has today acquired rival ISP Venus Business Communications. Venus operates a 10Gbps Dark Fibre network that covers “all of central London and the City“.

10,000 Midlothian Premises to Get Virgin Media’s Ultrafast Broadband

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed that 10,000 premises in Scotland’s Midlothian council area will gain access to their TV and 300Mbps capable broadband network before the end of 2018, which forms part of the operator’s wider expansion to another 360,000 premises across the country.
