The Broadband Forum has today announced that the first five G.fast devices running at 212MHz have successfully completed their certification program, which tested the kit at speeds of up to 1.45Gbps and copper line distances of up to 400 metres from the distribution point (cabinet/remote node etc.).

More than 40 MPs from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Rural Business (APPGRB) have today called on Ofcom to introduce better “annual monitoring” in order to ensure that Mobile operators like Vodafone, Three UK, O2 and EE keep to their future 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) coverage obligations.

House builder Persimmon has launched a lawsuit against BT (Openreach), which accuses the UK telecoms giant of allegedly owing them £7.2m plus interest for unpaid work as part of deploying new broadband ISP and phone infrastructure on 759 of its developments between 2008 and 2016.

Last week saw Openreach (BT) publish a Final Reference Offer for their revised Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product, which is intended to make it cheaper and easier for UK ISPs to deploy their own “full fibre” broadband networks via existing cable ducts and poles. The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today ruled that mobile operator Lycamobile broken the rules by applying surcharges for EU roaming (these were often higher than the maximum permitted) and applying fair use data (mobile broadband) roaming limits that were lower than the minimum permitted.

Customers of Sky’s (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) 4G mobile plans can already benefit from things like like data roll-over (unused data is saved for future usage or cashed in) and now they’ve upgraded their Sky Watch feature to add unlimited video streaming via any Sky app (i.e. without using up your mobile data allowance).

The latest forecast from the Government’s £1.8bn Broadband Delivery UK programme appears to now be predicting that fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable ISP networks will cover 97% of premises by March 2020, which is slightly down on some previous 98%+ remarks (not official targets).

Multi-Gigabit speed Mobile Broadband has taken another step forward today after Vodafone announced a list of 19 UK cities and towns that will be the first to benefit from their commercial roll-out of 5G mobile technology in 2019, which is being fuelled by a 10Gbps capable fibre optic (backhaul) network.

The Cambridgeshire County Council in England has today set an “ambitious new target,” which will see them aim to achieve “over” 30% coverage of Gigabit speed “full fibre” (FTTP etc.) broadband connectivity across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by 2022, among other things.
