A new report from Opensignal, which used crowd-sourced data to examine 4G network performance across 15 of the United Kingdom’s largest cities, has named Bristol as the fastest for mobile broadband download speeds with an average of 28.2Mbps. By comparison Sheffield was bottom on 19.9Mbps.

A new report from the Spectrum Policy Forum, which was conducted by Plum Consulting, has called on the Government to update on their progress toward doubling the annual contribution to the UK economy of use of spectrum by 2025 (mobile broadband, wifi, Satellite, digital TV etc.).

Cityfibre’s £30m deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in Peterborough (Cambridgeshire) has suffered complaints after the City Councillor for Park ward, John Peach, highlighted some “absolutely atrocious” reinstatement work.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Airband, which last year secured an investment of £16m and hopes to bring superfast broadband to a further 50,000 premises across England and Wales by 2021, has reported that they’ve nearly doubled their staff and have moved into a new Worcester office (Kirkham House).

Complaints made by UK ISPs BT and Virgin Media have today resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning a TV advert for Sky Broadband, which was found to have been “misleading” in its claims that their tech team could easily boost WiFi throughout your home with a simple action.

Budget orientated UK ISP TalkTalk has revealed that their roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the city of York has now covered 33,000 homes and businesses. The final 21,000 premises are due to “follow this year” (54,000 total) and customer satisfaction is high.

Good news. The remote Shetland Islands Council has secured a public investment of £1.91m from the UK Government’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) fund, which will be used to extend their existing Gigabit fibre network to include public sector sites (schools, council buildings etc.) on the North Isles of Yell and Unst.

A new survey of 1,000 UK office workers, which was conducted by business broadband ISP Glide, has claimed that 5% of businesses suffer multiple internet outages each day and 12% lose connectivity at least once a day. Respondents added that the average time to reconnect was 107 minutes.

The state aid supported Fastershire project, which is working to extend superfast broadband services across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire in England, has announced that a revised “full fibre” (FTTP) roll-out plan from UK ISP partner Gigaclear could be approved and published by the end of this month.

Consultancy firm Mott MacDonald, which were hired by Ofcom to review the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) process, have made a series of recommendations in order to better ensure that consumer complaints handlers for broadband, phone and mobile issues improve the process of accepting and adjudicating cases.

A new study has analysed information from 6,313 mobile data plans across 230 countries in order to compare the cost of 1GB (Gigabyte) of mobile data (mobile broadband) around the entire world. Sadly the United Kingdom ranked a “disappointing” 136th with an average price in USD of $6.66 (£5) per Gigabyte.

The Office for National Statistics has published an interesting new study that explores the scale of digital exclusion in the UK, which examines the reasons why around 5 million adults (10%) still aren’t using the internet. The familiar issues of disability, sickness, lack of skills and limited desire all come into play. No quick fixes.

Cityfibre has announced that the first homes on their new £60m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the West Midlands city of Coventry have now gone live via UK ISP partner Vodafone. The aim is to cover “almost every home” in the city by the end of 2021.

The UK Government’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has released £1.725m to help improve “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage in rural parts of Suffolk. The money is expected to result in a further 550 business and 600 non-business (homes etc.) premises being covered.

UK ISP BT has launched a new range of special offers on their superfast (FTTC) and ultrafast (G.fast, FTTP) broadband packages, which among other things gives new customers a choice of taking either an included Samsung Tablet A 10.1 (worth £179), Fitbit Charge 3 (worth £129.99) or Amazon Echo (worth £89.99).

Over the past couple of months there appears to have been a rise in complaints from customers of Vodafone’s superfast home broadband (FTTC) packages. Quite a few are reporting slowing speeds, particularly related to problems when trying to use popular video streaming services (Netflix, Twitch etc.).

Cityfibre has today appointed a former partner at global investment firm Goldman Sachs, Simon Holden, to become its first Group Chief Operating Officer, reporting directly to the CEO, Greg Mesch. Holden will help the operator to roll-out their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the UK.
