Mobile network operator EE UK (BT) has today added the option of two new “Swappable Benefits” – Amazon Prime Video (£5.99 per month) and Gamer’s Data Pass (£7.99 per month) – to their 4G and 5G based Pay Month Smart Plans. Such plans usually give you a choice of several included benefits, but you can also add more at cost.

Gigabit broadband ISP Community Fibre, which is rolling out FTTH services to over 500,000 premises across London by 2022, looks set to add real-time network performance, availability and security insights by adopting Kentik‘s SaaS analytics platform.

Openreach (BT) appears to be running a 6 month special offer for UK ISPs using Managed Engineer Installs for their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband service, which will start on 10th September 2019 and run until 10th March 2020.

Alternative network ISP Ecom (Electronic Communities) appears to be making good progress on their rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Buckinghamshire (England), which is now in the process of moving on toward Ledburn and aspires to cover 1,000 premises by the end of 2019.

At present around 96% of UK premises are estimated to be within reach of a so-called “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP network, yet Ofcom found that superfast connections only accounted for 59% of all fixed broadband lines at the end of 2018. Now a new Which? survey has helped to explain why so many are still on slow copper ADSL lines.

Customers looking to join the UK broadband ISP division of John Lewis are being offered a free Google Home Hub AI smart speaker. On top of that they’ve also introduced a bigger discount on their FTTC based superfast broadband and phone packages, which lasts for the first 12 months of service.

Cable TV, phone and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has reportedly committed to protect over 100,000 of their most vulnerable customers (e.g. pensioners, the unemployed and those with disabilities), such as by freezing their prices against future hikes or automatically moving them to a better (cheaper) deal.

David Henriques, a Senior Associate Economist at Ofcom and Visiting Fellow at the LSE, has appeared to suggest that menu regulation for fibre optic broadband networks may be a better approach for the United Kingdom to take than incentive orientated regulation.

Homes in the rural Monmouthshire (Wales) village of Llanddewi Rhydderch may soon be connected to a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband ISP network from Broadway Partners, which initially promised to deploy a “Gigabit” speed wireless network but ended up connecting locals at 30Mbps.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has tested the Mobile Broadband speeds experienced by the three largest Smartphone makers (by shipment volume) across 73 countries – Apple, Huawei and Samsung – and concluded that Samsung users experienced faster download speeds. But the wider picture is more complicated.

The Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) council in South West Wales has revealed the outline of a new plan that aims to help spread the availability of ultrafast “full fibre” broadband connectivity across rural parts of the county, which among other things includes a £2m investment to boost existing voucher schemes and a LFFN bid.

The piecemeal announcements continue today as UK ISP Virgin Media confirms that they’ve completed an extension of their 500Mbps+ capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and TV network to 3,700 premises (homes and businesses) in the Tameside town of Hyde, Greater Manchester.

BT Group has today continued to restructure its operations by selling their BT Fleet division, which owns and manages many of the vehicles used by Openreach and various other companies (e.g. the AA, EDF and National Grid), to AURELIUS Equity Opportunities SE & Co. KGaA for an undisclosed sum.

Rural fixed wireless broadband ISP Voneus, which currently only covers around 4,500 UK premises with their 30-50Mbps capable network, has managed to secure a large investment from Macquarie Capital that could help their network to target 900,000 homes. Going forward they also intend to rollout full fibre (FTTP) services.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has revealed how Openreach anticipates that reaching the final 10% of UK premises with 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is likely to require an “outlay of around £4,000 each to pass” (vs build costs of £300-£400 for the first 50% of premises).

A bit of pre-weekend fun. BT have informed us that customers on their retail broadband ISP network in the UK, specifically those video gamers downloading the Fortnite Season 10 update, have helped to create a 40% increase in internet traffic over normal holiday activity (recorded at 9am yesterday).
