A new Fife-based “full fibre” broadband ISP called Gigaloch (Optilec) has recently surfaced, which appears to have plans to deploy their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of the United Kingdom, albeit seemingly focused more on England and Scotland.

UK ISP BT has just issued their first biannual report on the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which highlights some of the known challenges. Overall they’ve so far handled 9,000 applications and 512 confirmed orders, resulting in a USO build for 4,000+ homes.

A Censuswide survey of 2,005 UK gamers who use consoles or games online for at least 1 hour a week, which was commissioned by UK broadband ISP Zen Internet, has found that “poor internet performance” could impact the purchasing decisions of 39% who may be considering the new consoles (XBox Series X and PlayStation 5).

A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 305,568 tweets that were aimed at major UK broadband ISPs, has revealed which providers had the most stressed customers. Overall it’s bad news for Shell Energy, but good news for Hyperoptic.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has just officially announced the launch of their new Openreach Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Superfast” (59Mbps) and “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) broadband package for new and existing customers from £35 per month. Meanwhile an outbreak of COVID-19 has forced their Sheffield call centre to close.

New data from UK broadband ISP TalkTalk, which examined the internet usage of their customers between January to August 2020, has helped the provider to identify the top 20 British hub locations for Home Working. Overall Huddersfield saw the largest increase of network data usage (37%).

The Telcom Group and sibling ClearFibre have today launched yet another sub-brand broadband ISP called WeFibre, which appears to be targeting social housing and aims to deploy their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 1 million premises by the end of 2023. Better yet this speed will cost you just £20.

UK ISP Exascale, which is currently building a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover premises in the Shropshire borough of Telford and Wrekin (here), has given their plans a huge capacity boost with the completion of a new 40km Dark Fibre network between Wolverhampton and Telford.

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) will today extend their existing partnership with Hubbub (here), with the aim being to donate 10,000 devices and 12 months of free calling and internet connectivity to “digitally excluded people” in UK cities that are either facing, or at risk of, new Tier 3 lockdown restrictions (COVID-19).

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs with Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and G.fast broadband lines that they will “soon” be deploying functionality that allows providers who wish to purchase this to amend Dynamic Line Management (DLM) profiles on customer lines, which sounds as if it may be more flexible than prior approaches.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today unsurprisingly chosen Ericsson to be their new supplier for ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) deployments across major UK cities, such as London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and more. The move marks a further step away from Huawei, which has been banned.

Good news, SpaceX has unofficially revealed how much they intend to charge open beta customers of their new Starlink Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite broadband service. Bad news, it’ll set you back $99 (c.£75) per month for the service rental and $499 (c.£380) for the ground terminal, tripod and router hardware.

Thales in the UK, working alongside Nokia and SkyFive, has today announced that their new 4G LTE Air to Ground (A2G) network is being made available to the global market, which could mean faster in-flight WiFi speeds of up to 100Mbps (shared between all of the passengers) and latency times of less than 50ms.

Managed communications provider and ISP Air IT has acquired London-based Netstar UK Limited and Birmingham-based Microtrading Limited for undisclosed sums, which has enabled the group to effectively double its size in the space of just nine months, while also expanding more into London and the West Midlands.
