The CEO of rural UK full fibre ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), Barry Forde, has become the first person to sign-up to the provider’s new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) plan. The first live speed test of this produced a download speed of 8341Mbps and uploads of 6644Mbps, with latency of just 1ms.

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.

Some 6,900 homes in the North East Derbyshire town of Dronfield have just become the latest to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, although initially locals will only be able to access a top speed of 516Mbps (average) until the future DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade completes.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today published their first ‘Internet Insights‘ report, which is a quarterly analysis of the provider’s network data with bitesize insights about internet usage trends in the UK. For example, between July 2019 and June 2020 customers of their FTTP packages increased their usage by 108%.

The change to Daylight Saving Time (DST) on Sunday, which saw clocks go back by 1 hour, has given some customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband – specifically a few of those with a VoIP based Sky Talk service and the SR203/204 (Sky Hub) router, a reprieve from an otherwise on-going timing bug.

Rural UK ISP Alncom, which over the past few years has built a mix of fixed wireless and “full fibre” broadband networks, have now begun to build a new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach the Northumberland market town of Alnwick.

Broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media have just completed a small extension of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the Lancashire (England) towns of Blackburn and Darwen, which now covers an additional 1,200 homes.

A new ISP called Broadband for Rural Kent (B4RK), which as the name suggests is modelling itself on B4RN’s community centric build strategy, is in the process of being setup by Tim Higgs and plans to help cater for poorly served villages in the county by deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The Scottish Government has today linked their new Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) to the UK’s Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme in order to significantly boost the value of their vouchers, which expands the pot up to £8,500 for SMEs and up to £6,500 for homes.

Ofcom UK has today given notice to Motorola and Sepura of a proposed infringement decision, which provisionally finds that the pair “broke competition law by exchanging competitively sensitive information” in relation to a contract for the continued operation of Airwave, the existing Emergency Services Network (ESN).

Several UK ISPs including Shell Energy, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk are today reportedly all being named as the “remaining bidders” for the Post Office’s telecoms division, specially its base of around 500,000 broadband and phone customers – said to be valued at around £100m.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,006 UK adults, which was conducted during August 2020, has helped to reveal roughly what proportion of people believe various different myths and falsehoods about the latest generation of ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband technology. Sadly 7% still believe 5G is connected to the spread of COVID-19.

A new piece of research has helped to reveal the top 10 UK council areas by average (median) broadband ISP upload speed, which perhaps unsurprisingly sees KCOM’s full fibre dominated city of Hull (East Yorkshire) come top on 13.7Mbps. Meanwhile Powys in Wales came last with an upload rate of just 2Mbps.

After five long years mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they’ve finally completed the rollout of their Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) service (aka – “Super Voice“), which is now available across their entire 4G network (equating to around 11,000 sites). Next stop.. EVS.

The Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, supported by various UK telecoms operators like BT, Avanti and €8.3m of EU funding, has for the first time successfully managed to integrate a standard commercially available 5G core (mobile broadband) network into a live Satellite network.
