The Reading Borough Councillor for Transport, Tony Page, has warned CityFibre that the local traffic disruption being caused by their rollout of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the town is so bad that, if it doesn’t improve, they may “seek to remove” the company’s contractor Instalcom.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) UK Pay TV service – reflecting around 3.5 million subscribers – might like to know that they’ll be able to access its “full range of premium kids entertainment and learning-based programmes” until 31st October 2021 and “at no extra cost” (including on-demand content).

The County Councils Network (CCN), which is a cross-party special interest group of the Local Government Association (LGA) – representing 36 of England’s councils, has published a new report that warns of a growing divide in “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps) coverage between urban cities and the “rural shires“.

Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre and ducted network solution, has secured a multi-million pound contract to support Phase One of Ogi‘s £200m project (here) – backed by Infracapital – to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025.

UK ISP Quickline has launched a new website called ‘Connected Yorkshire’, which will act as a central hub for information on their state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) phase 4 “superfast broadband” rollout project with NYnet and the North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC). It also covers West Yorkshire.

Internet provider Plusnet has quietly introduced a new broadband router called the ‘Hub Two‘, which may be familiar to some as it looks to be a re-brand of parent operator BT’s SmartHub 2 (SH2) device, which was originally shipped in 2018 (here) to support a new range of G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based packages.

The Broadband Delivery UK team have today launched a second batch of Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out. This aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage by gigabit ISP networks.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has estimated that 44.6 million UK people may have received scam calls and text messages during the past three months (summer period). But worryingly, around 2% of those who received such a message or call (roughly a million people) reported following the scammers’ instructions.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today followed yesterday’s information leak by officially unveiling their new Hub 5 router, which features faster wireless network speeds via Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), improved security (e.g. WPA3 encryption) and a 2.5Gbps speed LAN (Ethernet) port. Best of all, for many, it’s a free upgrade.

Bath-based ISP Brsk, which only recently started to deploy their new gigabit-capable “open access” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in West Yorkshire (here), has now begun to expand into locations around the neighbouring county of Lancashire – starting with 50,000 homes and businesses in Burnley and Padiham.

Never underestimate the power of vermin with a taste for the UK’s telecoms cables. Some 1,800 of Openreach’s (BT) broadband and phone customers in North Devon (England) were cut off from their ISPs this week after rodents managed to chomp their way through one of the operator’s key cables.

UK ISP BT has today confirmed they will appeal the preliminary ruling by the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT), which last month rejected the operator’s attempts to stop a £600m class action claim against the broadband and phone operator – this related to the alleged overcharging of over 2 million landline-only customers.

Openreach (BT) has published the Tranche 6 batch of 79 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP, G.fast) network.

Technology giant Samsung has today revealed that UK mobile operator O2 (VMO2) will shortly become one of the first providers in the country to conduct a commercial trial of their latest 5G Massive MIMO radios, as well as 4G radios, over both low-band and mid-band spectrum frequencies. The new kit will also be OpenRAN compliant.

Rural UK ISP Voneus, which is supported by Macquarie Capital, have begun upgrading their first village in Bedfordshire – Dunton – to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which will replace their existing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in the area.
