Virgin Media UK Extend 1Gb Broadband to 1200 Homes in Wigan

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today confirmed that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network has just been extended, slightly, to cover a further 1,200 homes in the Greater Manchester town of Wigan.

Alternative network and UK ISP Fibrus has today secured a further investment boost of £220m from a consortium of banks, including the UK Infrastructure Bank, which will be used to extend their existing rollout of a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Northern Ireland to 330,000 premises.

SpaceX has added a coverage map to the website for their Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband ISP satellites, which makes it easier to see which parts of the United Kingdom and world can currently access the service. Anything north of around Aberdeen in Scotland is currently excluded.

A new Ofcom report has found that 61% of parents are aware of the existing network-level internet filtering (Parental Control) tools provided by big UK broadband ISPs, yet only 27% have actually chosen to use them. Meanwhile, 6% of children have circumvented parental controls and 5% used a proxy server to avoid them.

A new Which? survey of more than 3,903 UK broadband customers, which was conducted between December 2021 and January 2022 by Deltapoll, has claimed that 49% of respondents (ISP customers) had suffered some sort of service problem in the last 12 months (usually related to poor speeds and router problems).
