Broadband and mobile providers were on Friday subjected to a shock twist after the Government – without consultation – amended the Russian sanctions legislation to require that – “a person who provides an internet access service must take reasonable steps to prevent a user of the service in the [UK] from accessing … an internet service provided by a designated person.”

Energy provider and UK home broadband ISP Shell Energy is facing a new investigation by the UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, after the provider indicated that it might not have sent the required end-of-contract and annual best tariff notifications to customers.

Internet traffic across UK broadband ISPs surged last night as people tuned in to stream the Champions League semi-final and to download the latest 40GB (GigaByte) ‘Season 3’ update for the popular ‘Call of Duty Warzone’ video game. As a result, TalkTalk set a new peak traffic record of 8.715Tbps (Terabits per second).

Over the past few weeks a small number of Zen Internet’s UK broadband customers – primarily those on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages – have reported a drop in speed, which in some cases has been significant. The issue seems to relate to a platform migration, but thankfully the ISP has now resolved “most” of it.

CityFibre has today confirmed that they will invest £17 million to rollout a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the North Northamptonshire (England) town of Kettering, which is set to begin sometime in “early May” 2022.

New research from the University of Cambridge – supported by BT and Huawei – has attempted to identify the theoretical limits of Openreach’s standard UK copper broadband lines (unshielded twisted copper pairs), while harnessing up to 12GHz of spectrum. The result is faster speeds are possible, but full fibre is still the future.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Rural Powerhouse has today published a new report that warns “Rural Britain is not a museum” and is being “held back” by, among many other things, “slow” broadband connectivity and the need to urgently improve 4G and 5G mobile infrastructure.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced another shake-up of its branding, which in simple terms will see EE – over time – become the “flagship brand for our consumer customers” (i.e. converged broadband and mobile plans etc.) and BT become the flagship brand for their Enterprise and Global units.

Uswitch.com has attempted to identify the top 104 UK locations for hybrid workers, which sees the city of York come top thanks to its broadband speeds (159Mbps), good schools, low crime, and closeness to Leeds. By comparison, Hastings was the least desirable due to sluggish broadband, a lack of GPs and poor air quality.

Netomnia – supported by UK broadband ISP YouFibre – has confirmed that they’ve begun to build their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the Cambridgeshire town of St Neots (England) and the town of Falkirk (Scotland). Services have also started to go live in Bridgend, Hamilton and Lancaster.

Ofcom’s latest Q4 2021 (calendar) study of UK consumer complaints has named Shell Energy as attracting the most gripes for fixed broadband services, while TalkTalk did the same for landline phone and Virgin Mobile took flak for Pay Monthly mobile services. Finally, Virgin Media (VMO2) were on the naughty step for Pay TV.

UK ISP Cuckoo has today launched a new “world-first” service called “24-Hour Eggspress Wi-Fi“, which claims it can beat the “industry’s standard 14-day wait time” when switching broadband providers by getting customers online “anywhere” in the United Kingdom within 24 hours. But there’s a little more to it than that.

Openreach will next month launch the UK ISP pilot phase of their new Single Order Transitional Access Product (SOTAP), which forms part of the withdrawal process for the old analogue copper telephone network. This will make it possible to offer a standalone ADSL broadband line, with optional phone services via VoIP etc.

The UK Government’s Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which is the arm’s length body at the Department of International Trade (DIT) and is tasked with investigating “unfair import practices and unforeseen surges of imports“, has opened two new investigations into imports of fibre optic cables from China.
