A new study has attempted to forecast which ten UK local authorities will see the most significant increase in their coverage of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks over the next two years. Topping the table were North East Lincolnshire, Oxford and Stevenage.

Network operator Neos Networks has today been named as the preferred bidder for Network Rail’s Project Reach, which among other things could see them invest in the design and build of a new trackside fibre optic communications network. This could also help to improve UK gigabit broadband and 5G mobile coverage.

Lincolnshire-based UK ISP LightSpeed Broadband, which aspires to build a full fibre (FTTP) network to 1 million premises across the East of England by the end of 2025, has continued to create a new management team by appointing Chris Tagg as its new Chief Technology & Information Officer (CTIO).

Broadway Partners (ISP Broadway Broadband) has today appointed a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Delivery Director to help overseen their fibre build, which aims to cover 250,000 premises across rural Wales and Scotland with a gigabit broadband (FTTP) network by around 2028.

Sky’s (Sky Broadband) ISP sibling for small business customers, Sky Connect, has today moved to keep up with competitors by launching a new WiFi 6 capable Hub (broadband router) and 4G Dongle (i.e. mobile data as an automatic backup) with new capabilities, such as better security and guest Wi-Fi.

A new biannual update from Point Topic has revealed how the top and bottom 10 UK local authorities have changed to December 2022, at least with respect to their coverage of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks. In addition, more than 1.3 million premises can now choose between at least three independent fibre ISPs.

Broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today confirmed that their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network now covers 1.15 million UK homes, which will need to almost double in order to hit their goal of 2 million by the end of 2023. The provider has also launched a TV campaign to criticise ISPs that adopt “misleading” mid-contract price hikes.

Cable broadband giant Liberty Global has today acquired 1.335 million shares in Vodafone Group PLC, which represents 4.92% of the outstanding share capital (excluding treasury shares). But the operator confirmed that “it is not considering an offer” for the UK based mobile operator and will not seek board representation.

The Welsh Government (WG) has today announced that the Michaelston-y-Fedw Internet CIC (Community Interest Company), which a few years ago deployed a 1Gbps full fibre (FTTP) network to reach 240 premises in a rural village between Cardiff and Newport, has been extended into neighbouring communities.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today informed us that existing customers of their pay TV service can now add “Sky Sports Ultra HD” (4K) to their package for £7 extra per month, which also includes support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture quality (assuming your TV can support this).

Rural focused UK ISP Quickline, which is deploying a mix of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband networks, has today announced that their rollout will expand speeds of up to 1Gbps to “more than 55,000 rural homes and businesses” in 96 places across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire in 2023.

A growing number of ISPs have introduced cheaper Social Tariffs over the past year – aimed at those on benefits who are most exposed to the UK’s cost-of-living crisis. As part of this, some providers have called on Openreach to launch social tariff products at wholesale to support them, but there’s so far no indication of that happening.

CityFibre has today announced that the primary build of their £24.5 million project to deploy a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Inverness in Scotland has completed. Some 90% of local homes and businesses are now covered (28,000 premises).
