Across the country, you’ll find many rural villages that have fought and been successful in getting a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network installed, often with the help of the Government’s voucher scheme. But sometimes even success stories can hit roadblocks, leaving locals stuck in limbo.

Cumbria-based network operator and broadband ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has today named a further 6 UK towns and cities for their ongoing rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which includes some major locations like Leeds and Brighton.

The annual Broadband Genie 2023 survey has just named home broadband ISP Plusnet as the “Best Provider” of the year and also the “Best Value for Money“, while a variety of other internet providers also scooped various other awards across several different categories.

Netomnia Kent Rollout Map 2023

Network operator Netomnia – supported by UK ISP YouFibre – has just quietly added two new towns in Kent (England) to the 2023 rollout plan for their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which has already been extended to cover 410,000 UK premises (up from 300k in November 2022).

Some of UK broadband ISP Virgin Media’s phone customers, primarily those on their latest Hub 5 router who have been moved to their new IP (VoIP) based voice platform, have spent the best part of a year having to deal with lots of phantom “ghost calls” (no number calls). But a firmware fix is finally in the works.

UK ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has confirmed that they’ve just completed the expansion of their gigabit-capable broadband network – via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / RFoG) technology – to cover 6,400 homes in the West Sussex (England) town of East Grinstead.

The Scottish Government has published a new Public Review (PR) consultation for Scotland, which reveals that some 447,170 premises might need state aid help under the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in order to access 1Gbps speeds (rising to 1,281,434 if including ‘Under Review‘ premises).

Ofcom has today announced that they may revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (VMO2) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1900-1920 MHz), which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

CityFibre has today announced the completion of their £25m “primary build” in the West Midlands (England) town of Solihull, which has expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 44,000 premises (around 85% of residential properties), including most businesses.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has today announced somewhat of a reverse after the provider’s current CEO, Paul Stobart, announced his intention to retire at the end of March 2023, after five years in the role. Replacing him will be the company’s original CEO, and current Founder and Chairman, Richard Tang.

UK ISP BT and the West London Alliance (WLA), which represents the London Boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Ealing, Harrow and Hillingdon, have today announced a new £3.9 million partnership that aims to provide up to 15,000 “homes, schools and businesses with access to ultra-fast broadband” using full fibre technology.

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) in England has launched a new voucher scheme to help local “businesses suffering from the slowest broadband speeds“, which will provide funding to help them connect via an alternative 4G-based mobile broadband solution.

UK ISP and digital network builder Connexin, which is investing £80m from Whitehelm Capital (now PATRIZIA) to deploy a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of Hull and Yorkshire (here and here), has today opened its new HQ in Hull’s K3 Business Park on Clough Road.

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) appears to have launched a tariff refresh of their Pay Monthly (SIM-Only and Phone) plans today, which sees some prices rise (others stay the same), tweaks to data allowances and possibly a few additional changes that we’ve yet to fully identify.

Network builder FullFibre Limited, which is deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband ISP network that aims to cover “at least” 500,000 premises by 2025, has today launched a new Community Investment Fund to promote digital connectivity in over 80 of its build towns.

Neos Networks has announced that their ongoing project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc.) across Oxfordshire (England), many of which are in rural areas, is “on track” to complete by the end of 2023 – some 90 sites have already been reached.
