Today we’re taking our usual biannual look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite) since the end of 2023. Overall, broadband speeds have continued to improve, albeit not without some surprises.

Some of Vodafone’s UK customers have questioned the mobile network operator’s claim that their inclusive roaming feature comes at “no extra cost”, particularly after a stealthy 22p call fee was introduced. But you’d have to dig deeper into their website to find it and the charge doesn’t apply to everybody.

The mobile operator division of supermarket chain ASDA, which is powered by a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement with Vodafone, has just introduced a new promotion that cuts the price of their 10GB and 25GB Pay As You Go (PAYG) mobile plans in half for the first 6 months of service. But only if you set it to auto-renew.

Early adopters of SpaceX’s ultrafast and low-latency Starlink broadband service, which is powered by a mega constellation of small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), are starting to be invited to help test out the internet provider’s new WiFi integrate Mini Dish (terminal) hardware and Mini Roaming service add-on. But the kit doesn’t come cheap.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened a Phase 1 investigation into the recently announced deal by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) to acquire Juniper Networks for an all-cash transaction for $40.00 per share (here), which represented an equity value of approximately $14 billion (£11bn).

Virgin Media O2 Engineers Holding Fibre Cables

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has today announced that they expect to cover 13,000 premises across the Kent (England) city of Canterbury via their new wholesale accessible 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

A relatively new alternative broadband network and ISP called Pulse Fibre, which is focused upon tackling UK new build homes, has revealed that they’re aiming to complete over 250,000 unique “full fibre” (FTTP) connections into new build dwellings. As part of this, they’ve just joined the Fibre Cafe connectivity aggregation platform.

Low-cost UK mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which harnesses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement, has announced that they’re offering sports fans heading to the Euros in Germany, and the Olympics in Paris, unlimited free roaming data (mobile broadband) for the duration of the events this summer.

Mobile operator Three UK has revealed that they’re preparing to launch a new “Go Roam Around the World Extra” service, which will enable customers to access their UK allowances (Fair Usage Policy applicable) in “92 new destinations” and all for an additional daily roaming charge of £7.

UK ISP Zen Internet today says they’ve become the first broadband wholesaler to offer the latest 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps download speed capable packages (uploads of 120Mbps) over Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. But the announcement doesn’t say precisely when Zen’s own retail customers will be able to order it.

Ofcom has just confirmed that they will revoke the current mobile operator licences – held by EE (BT), Three UK and O2 (Virgin Media) – for the unpaired part of the 2100MHz band (1899.9 – 1920MHz) by 3rd April 2029, which was originally auctioned off in April 2000 to support the rollout of 3G mobile (mobile broadband) networks.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that they’ve been able to work with strategic supplier Ericsson to improve the energy efficiency of their national 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network by up to 70% “at selected sites“. This is largely thanks to the deployment of next-generation AI-powered hardware and software solutions.
