The founder of TalkTalk, Sir Charles Dunstone, and fellow shareholders are reportedly preparing to inject around £180m of new equity into the financially troubled UK internet provider. The move would help to tackle the threat of two large debt repayments, which are due over the coming months and said to total up to over £1bn.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published a new study that attempts to rank 20 of London’s Boroughs based on the level of “Good Mobile Coverage” they receive from the UK’s mobile network operators. Overall, Southwark had the highest average levels of Good Coverage (76.3%), while Barnet had the lowest (48%).

A new Opinium survey of 2,004 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted between 16th April 2024 to 22nd April 2024, has claimed that broadband ISP customers who haven’t switched for 7-8 years are the worst off, paying on average £22.10 extra a month. The situation is almost as bad for mobile users’ too.

The latest annual study from Cable.co.uk has tested fixed line broadband ISP packages from 223 countries (up from 219 last year) to create a global price comparison, which finds that the UK ranks 96th cheapest (down sharply from 76th), with an average monthly cost of $38.79 (£30.65) and that’s up from $34.19.

Consumer magazine Which? have announced that UK broadband ISP Zen Internet has been crowned the winner of their new ‘Customer Service Brand of the Year Award’ for 2024, while mobile network operator SMARTY picked up the award for ‘Utilities Brand of the Year’.

Investment group Fern Trading (Octopus Investments) has today begun the next phase of customer migrations on their alternative UK full fibre broadband ISP networks, which are shifting to a central retail provider under Cuckoo. Customers of Jurassic Fibre and Swish Fibre have already been through this process, and today it’s the turn of Giganet.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchinson 3G) has asked Ofcom to make a useful technical change to its existing licence for the 3.9GHz (3925 – 4009MHz) spectrum band, which is held by sibling UK Broadband Ltd. The change, if approved, would enable them to use this with 5G technology to boost their Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) packages.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT (EE) has this morning announced a revision to its timetable for moving all customers off the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and onto digital landlines (Digital Voice), which follows last week’s confirmation (here and here) that the deadline for migration had been extended from Dec 2025 to 31st Jan 2027.

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has approved the business case for their new 4G+ project, which is more widely investing £8.9m from the North Wales Growth Deal in order to improve the availability of mobile voice and data services, as well as full fibre broadband, to key commercial sites and transport networks.

Sources have informed ISPreview that broadband ISP EE (BT) appears to have started inviting customers, specifically only those on one of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) products, to take part in a new “Hub Enhancement Trial“. This is testing “new technology that’s designed to provide a coverage boost/enhanced Wi-Fi experience in the home“.

New research from Ofcom, which surveyed 1,104 UK adults aged 18+ during November 2023, has suggested that 83% of UK people who had looked for information about debt support ended up turning to their broadband, landline and or mobile provider for it. More often than not, they found what they were looking for.

Telecoms and broadband giants CityFibre and BT have both scooped up wins at this year’s annual Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards 2024 event. CityFibre secured the Gold Achievement Award for its third consecutive year (four if you include lower awards) and BT won the Industry Sector Award for ‘Information & Communication’.

In case anybody missed it after being buried in yesterday’s BT results (here). The plan to withdraw BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR), which was due to complete by December 2025, has been delayed until 31st January 2027 in order to give broadband ISPs, telecare providers and consumers more time to adapt.

The Bolton Council in Greater Manchester (England) has revealed that they’re taking enforcement action against broadband network operator IX Wireless, which is accused of installing antenna equipment on their pole (mast) erections without consultation or consent from the local authority.

Internet traffic travelling across the London Internet Exchange (LINX), which excludes data being passed by private interconnection (PI), reached a new record peak of 9.5Tbps (Terabits per second) on the Tuesday 14th May 2024 at around 8:25pm this week.

An unspecified number of Openreach’s broadband ISP and phone customers, including some Ethernet links, appear to have been disrupted in the Shropshire (England) town of Telford after the operator’s network was “badly damaged” in an attack. The operator informs that this “attack” is not being linked to cable theft.

The latest BT Group H2 FY24 results to March 2024 reveal that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 1 million premises to their coverage in the quarter to cover 13.812m, while EE’s 5G mobile covers 75% of the population (up from 72% in H1), the PSTN (analogue phone) migration won’t complete until Jan 2027 and Openreach is named “preferred bidder” for Type C Project Gigabit contracts.
