Broadband, phone and mobile operator Manx Telecom (MT), which serves premises across the remote Isle of Man, has revealed that they will begin “shutting down” their legacy copper telecoms network in 2025, with the full switch-off completed “no later than” 2029.

UK ISP InternetTY (aka – Internet ThankYou), which in 2020 began deploying a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to “rural and semi-urbanised areas” across Staffordshire and Lincolnshire, has revealed that they now cover around 12,000 premises in North Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire.

Satellite communications firm Viasat appears to be following Starlink and AST SpaceMobile by successfully demonstrating their own Direct-to-Device (D2D) connectivity, which could allow their broadband satellites to connect with “everyday devices“, like 4G/5G mobile phones, industrial machinery or transport operators.

Network operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today revealed some insights from their network, which among other things shows that they recorded an 8.1% rise in broadband usage (a new record) and a 9% uplift in mobile data traffic year-on-year. But that’s not all.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has confirmed to ISPreview that, as a “festive treat for our customers“, they have temporarily opened up access to their Virgin TV Ultra HD (4K) channel (Ch 175 and Ch 999) to all their V6, TV360 and Stream customers at no extra cost until 1st January 2025.

Rural UK broadband ISP Wessex Internet has today announced that they’ve begun the build phase of their new £33.5m state aid supported Project Gigabit contract in Dorset and South Somerset (Lot 14), which will extend their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 21,400 hard-to-reach local homes and businesses.

Mobile provider Tesco Mobile, which is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) on O2’s national platform, has this morning become the latest UK telecoms operator to adopt Ofcom’s new guidance on inflation-linked annual price rises. But they appear to be taking a more proportional approach than many other operators.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their new 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network has passed an important milestone by covering 1 million premises across Wales (up from 816,000 in January 2024 and 700,000 in July 2023).

Contract-free UK mobile provider VOXI, which is a virtual network operator (MVNO) sibling of Vodafone, has today announced the introduction of eSIM (Electronic SIM) support to their mobile service for both new and existing customers who take one of their SIM Only mobile plans.

Abingdon-based rural ISP and full fibre network builder Gigaclear has today celebrated a “record year of growth in 2024” after adding 40,000 new customers (up almost 50% in the year) to total over 130,000, while also extending their network coverage to 580,000 premises as ‘Ready for Service’ (up by 100k in the year).

Edinburgh-based UK ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has today confirmed that they’ve “completed” their roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across the rural Northumberland village of Harbottle, which is home to over 250 people and forms part of their £7.3m Project Gigabit delivery contract (here) to cover 3,750 hard-to-reach premises in the county.

Sky (Sky Broadband etc.) has this afternoon announced that they’ve signed an expanded partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery in the UK and Ireland, which means that existing Sky TV and NOW TV customers (e.g. Sky Glass, Sky Stream) will gain free (non-exclusive) access to the new ad-supported streaming service (app), Max (HBO Max), when it launches in 2026.

Broadband network operator and UK ISP Lightning Fibre, which has been building a new “full fibre” (FTTP) network across parts of Sussex and Kent in England, has today revealed that their deployment in the Old Town area of Eastbourne has covered 6,574 (87%) premises and seen 2,021 of those take their service (31% of connectable premises or 27% of the total area).

Satellite operator AST SpaceMobile has today signed a “definitive” long-term commercial agreement that will allow Vodafone to harness their new network of cellular broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) until 2034. This is essentially a space-based 2G, 4G and 5G mobile broadband service that can connect with regular handsets around the world.
