Alternative network operator and ISP Trooli (Call Flow) has revealed that they’re also planning to shut their “up to” 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband network in Kent, which currently still covers hundreds of premises across the villages of Stansted and parts of Fairseat.

The CEO of network access provider Openreach, Clive Selley, has once again called on the government to help boost the UK roll-out of gigabit-capable broadband networks by making a number of key changes to several new bills. But gaining acceptance of these calls has proven difficult, particularly with a group of cross-party MPs campaigning for the opposite.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has finally granted Canadian company Kepler Communications a wireless telegraphy satellite earth station network licence for the operation of their new global network of CubeSats and larger sized broadband satellites. This will allow them to deploy their user terminals for a range of different services in the UK.

Avanti Communications, which is based in the UK and runs the HYLAS network of four large Ka-band communication satellites in high earth orbit (35,792km) for rural broadband and backhaul delivery across the EMEA, has this week opened a new technology HQ in the heart of Spaceport Cornwall’s Space Systems Operations Facility in Newquay.

Peterborough-based Rydal Group, which is a UK telecoms, broadband and managed IT provider, has today announced that they’ve acquired the IT services arm of Trisoft Limited, a Midlands-based technology provider. The move follows a recent acquisition spree, which most recently saw the group gobble phone and internet provider Merula.

Online shopping giant Amazon has confirmed that they will attempt to launch their first batch of 27 ultrafast broadband satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for Project Kuiper on Wednesday next week (9th April 2025) – mission “KA-01“. But it will take a further 79 launches before the new global mega constellation is fully completed.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has published new research into internet adoption and digital disadvantage, which among other things estimates that 2.8 million people (5% of the UK population) do not have internet access (broadband etc.) at home. But 69% of those unlikely to get access in the next 12 months said this was because they had “no need” or were “not interested” in it.

The Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), which is an industry think-tank for the Government, has today announced that ten of the largest UK broadband and connectivity players (Openreach, Sky etc.) have agreed to sign letters encouraging their suppliers to adopt voluntary minimum standards as part of their effort to reach climate goals.

The UK government has set out the scope and ambition for their new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill (CSRB), which aims to respond to increasing attacks from “cyber criminals and state actors” by toughening and expanding the existing rules for broadband, mobile, managed service providers, data centres and even their suppliers.

Eutelsat has announced that their OneWeb network, which is a global constellation of broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that is still partly supported by the UK government (11% stake), is “now live and operational” for commercial and business aviation customers (airlines etc.) and they’re “ramping up” related deployments.

M Group new branding for 2025

Civil engineering firm M Group Services, which was last year acquired (here) by Private equity firm CVC (Fund IX) and also harbours a telecoms (broadband and mobile) focused division via several familiar brands (Avonline Networks, magdalene, Morrison and waldon), has today announced that they’re re-branding to just plain ‘M Group‘ (sans the ‘Services’ part).

Network analyst firm Streetwave, which is harnessing bin lorries to map the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across 113 UK councils, has said its data “calls into question” Ofcom’s claim that 88-89% of the UK’s landmass (geographic coverage) can access a 4G network if you look across all operators.
