The latest company accounts for broadband ISP Plusnet, which is part of wider BT Group, has revealed that the company’s turnover fell by -15% to £343m in the year to 31st March 2025 (down from £402m last year) and their employee headcount declined by 133 to total 944.

Fibre optic network supplier Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre, cabling and ducted solutions, has been chosen to help supply GoFibre’s new £105m (state aid) Project Gigabit contract for North East Scotland (here), which aims to extend their full fibre broadband (FTTP) network to “around” 63,000 premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

In a small but interesting update, the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has announced a string of new studies to evaluate the performance, delivery and value of its various mobile and broadband roll-out programmes – including Project Gigabit, Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN), Shared Rural Network (SRN) and GigaHubs (extension of LFFN).

Mobile network provider giffgaff, which harnesses O2’s virtual operator (MVNO) platform in the UK, has launched a new promotion that slashes the monthly price of their unlimited data (mobile broadband) plan on an 18-month “flexible” minimum term from £25 to £15 per month.

Mobile network operator 1p Mobile, which is a virtual network operator (MVNO) on EE’s UK platform, currently appears to be suffering from a significant and protracted outage of their website services. The situation also seems to be delaying the provider’s ability to activate new SIMs.

Alternative network operator and UK ISP Highland Broadband (formerly Lothian Broadband), which is deploying a 10Gbp capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across rural parts of the Scottish Highlands, has today announced that they’ve secured a £50m funding boost to help support a “major expansion” of their network “throughout rural Scotland“.

Internet provider YouFibre, which is the primary retail ISP outlet for Netomnia’s (Brsk) 8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, has today announced that the latest Wi-Fi 7 tech will now be included as standard across all residential and business broadband packages “at no extra cost” – making it one of the first among major providers to do so.

Customers of broadband ISPs EE and BT who also take their Pay TV (IPTV) service, specifically those that continue to use older TV boxes, have been informed that their devices will lose support for the Discovery+ streaming app entirely from 22nd September 2025. This also impacts TNT Sports on-demand content (i.e. catch-up content, extended coverage etc.).

SpaceX’s Starlink service, which sells ultrafast broadband to the UK and globally via masses of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), has done what some might consider a bit of a ‘bait-and-switch’ by suddenly replacing their ‘Pause Mode‘ (i.e. allowing you to stop and restart the service at no extra cost) with a new ‘Standby Mode‘ that costs £4.50 per month.

Mobile network operator and home broadband ISP EE (BT) is reportedly preparing to launch a second Wi-Fi 7 powered router “later this year“, which is intended to complement their existing Smart Hub Pro router (inc. Smart WiFi Pro mesh kit) that is sold alongside their fastest 1.6Gbps FTTP packages on Openreach’s network.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has joined with a number of major new partners, including Arcadis, Thames Water, Cadent, Affinity Water and Lightsonic, to trial a couple of different approaches for detecting mains water and gas leaks, which cleverly works by harnessing the operator’s existing fibre optic broadband network.

Network operator TfW Ffeibr (TFW Fibre), which is an arm’s-length initiative setup by Transport for Wales (TfW) and thus the Welsh Government, has today announced the delivered of its “first commercial fibre connectivity contract” with Cloud Centres Networks for the fibre that runs alongside local railways.

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that their new mobile plans for children under the age of 18 – called “Safer SIMs” – are now available to take, after being soft launched a few weeks ago (here). The plans form part of the operator’s commitment toward “being the UK’s best network for families“.

A new survey of 500 national landowners, which was conducted by telecoms investor AP Wireless UK – a company with a strong vested interest in this area, has claimed that 35% of respondents are considering terminating their mobile mast agreements, citing concerns over rent cuts, legal pressure and loss of trust in mobile network operators.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have taken a break from telecoms service provision in order to highlight the ease to which cyber criminals can break into your online accounts. In order to do this they enlisted the help of an ethical hacker to conduct a security assessment on a group of volunteers. Needless to say, account passwords were broken within 3 minutes.
