Openreach 20 million full fibre premises milestone PR 240925

National network operator Openreach (BT) has this morning confirmed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers broadband speeds of up to 1,800Mbps to homes via hundreds of UK ISPs, has now covered 20 million premises (up from 18.3m on 1st May 2025) and take-up has risen to around 38%.

The Co-Founder and Chairman of alternative rural broadband ISP Fibrus, Conal Henry, will tomorrow tell the Connected Britain event that Government subsidies (e.g. the £5bn Project Gigabit programme) are being “wasted” due to Ofcom’s rules allegedly making the roll-out of rural broadband “unnecessarily expensive“.

New techy-focused broadband ISP Olilo, which only launched a few short weeks ago (here), has this week announced that they’ve just placed their first consumer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) orders via the aquila platform from AllPoints Fibre Networks’ (APFN). The latter is a wholesale platform that aggregates connectivity from several different full fibre networks.

Network operator nexfibre and supporting broadband ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), which share some of the same parentage, have today announced that they’ve expanded the reach of their symmetric 2Gbps speed full fibre (FTTP) network to more than 21,000 homes in the West Sussex seaside town of Littlehampton “for the first time“.

Openreach (BT), which is currently in the process of converting the “majority” of their commercial UK vehicle fleet (i.e. 23,000 vans and cars) to Electric Vehicles by the end of March 2031, has announced a new deal that will see myenergi supply thousands of smart ‘zappi’ EV chargers to its engineers – giving them a simple way to charge vehicles at home overnight.

The London North Eastern Railway (LNER) has announced that customers travelling along a picturesque 45-mile stretch of the line in Northumberland (England) can now access “significantly improved mobile phone and Wi-Fi connectivity“. This is thanks to a joint project with Railsite Telecom, O2 and VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK).

Hampshire-based alternative network builder and UK ISP toob, which has deployed a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other areas, has today announced that they’ve connected their 100,000th customer (up from 90k on 12th June 2025).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today provided more details to ISPreview on their future plans for a trial of full fibre broadband (FTTP) using 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology in early 2026. The trial is planned to reach about 40,000 premises in Guildford and push download speeds from ISPs up to a blistering 8.5Gbps (8,500Mbps).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK (VodafoneThree) has revealed that they intend to switch off their now ancient 2G based mobile network “during 2030“, roughly three years ahead of the government’s official 2033 deadline for the phasing out of both 2G and 3G services (here). The operator has already shut down its 3G network (here).

Tarana Wireless has announced that their next-generation “6GHz” capable G1 wireless (ngFWA) platform and kit is now ready to deploy in the UK with the addition of support for the UK’s Band C (5725-5850 MHz). This can be enabled via an “optional, free software upgrade to unlock the 6 GHz spectrum as it is available“.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today provided a progress update on the difference that their innovations (e.g. drones, mini-exchanges, LiDAR-powered planning etc.) are making to their ongoing roll-out of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology. This network now covers 20 million premises.

Mobile and broadband operator Sure, which serves the English Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, has confirmed that customers of the Airtel Vodafone service have started to be migrated on to their network. The move follows last year’s £48m deal to build a new “world-class” 5G mobile broadband network across the islands as part of Sure’s acquisition of the operator.

Hull-based alternative UK network operator MS3, which has deployed their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 234,000 premises (207k RFS) in the North of England, has announced that they’ve just connected their 20,000th customer in the Hull and Humber region (up from 19,000 on 3rd July 2025).

Mobile operator VodafoneThree (Vodafone and Three UK) has this morning announced that they’ve signed two multi-billion-pound and 8-year long partnerships with network technology suppliers Ericsson and Nokia. The deals will see both suppliers provide radios and other cell / core network kit and services for 17,000+ mobile sites across the United Kingdom.

The debt strained TalkTalk Group, which has already been through a demerger of its businesses and last year secured a £400m refinancing package to avoid a default on its debts (here, here) – not to mention the latest £120m funding deal to help tackle recent financial pressures (here), is reportedly set to appoint advisers PJT Partners to help sell off its remaining operations.
