Improved Mobile Planning Rules and £30m for UK Rural 5G Trials

The UK Government has commitment another £30m to help up to 10 rural locations conduct “innovative trials” of 5G mobile / mobile broadband applications as part of a new Rural Connected Communities (RCC) project, which could stimulate commercial investment. On top of that they aim to ease mobile planning rules.

A new UK Government funded project called NoServiceHere is hoping, among other things, to harness the power of the Twitter community in order to help identify areas (rural and urban) of poor mobile signal by curating geospatial data, which can then be used to help focus the rollout of 3G, 4G and future 5G networks.

Survey Claims Majority Who Haggle Get Better Broadband ISP Deal

A new survey of 1,000 UK broadband customers, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which?, has claimed that 87% of those who haggle with their ISP for a better deal were offered a discount or other incentive to stay with the provider rather than switch away, but apparently most people don’t try it.

One of the Government funded 5G RuralFirst testbeds on Orkney (Scotland) appears to be delivering “high-speed” wireless broadband to a number of remote rural properties by using solar panels as receivers for a new Light Fidelity (LiFi) network (i.e. Li-Fi solar backhaul).

TalkTalk UK ISP TV Advert Pulled Over Incorrect Speed Promotion

One of TalkTalk’s TV adverts has been pulled after the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found it to be incorrect, which occurred because the connection speeds referenced in the broadcast’s voice-over did not match the speeds being promoted in the broadband provider’s on-screen text.

BT Auchenmalg Exchange Fire in Scotland Knocks Out Some 999 Calls

The Dumfries & Galloway Police have confirmed that a fire, which midday yesterday burned down BT’s Auchenmalg exchange in Scotland, also knocked out telephones, broadband (ADSL but not FTTC) and prevented fixed line calls to emergency services for those in the surrounding area. It could take “several days” to fix.
