The government’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) has today published its report on foreign involvement in the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure (CNI), which warns that BT’s deployment of broadband ISP and telecoms equipment supplied by Chinese firm Huawei could have “implications for national security“.

A new survey of 500 small and medium sized businesses in the United Kingdom, which was conducted by AXA Business Insurance, has revealed that one in four were unaware of the publicly funded BDUK scheme to help make superfast broadband ISP connections available to 90% of the country by the end of 2015.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has announced that it intends to launch a new 4G based Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) Mobile Broadband service this summer and that its recently announced plan to double their network speeds up to 80Mbps (here) will begin “within weeks“.

Following a number of trials at800.tv (DMSL), which is funded by £180m from mobile network operators, has predicted that just 90,000 homes in the United Kingdom will see their Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services being disrupted by the new generation of 4G based Mobile Broadband services in the 800MHz band.

The Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has today signed a new state aid supported deal with BT that will see the operators superfast fibre broadband (25Mbps+) services being deployed to cover 91% of local premises by Spring 2016.

The UK government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has called in major mobile operators, broadband ISPs and online content giants (BT, Sky, Facebook, Twitter etc.) to a special summit on 17th June 2013 where she intends to urge stricter censorship of internet websites and services that distribute “harmful material”.

The Suffolk County Council has named the first locations that will benefit from its state aid supported project to make BT’s superfast fibre broadband (25Mbps+) services available to 85-90% of local premises by the end of 2015.

The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has confirmed that it now expects broadband ISPs to start issuing their first warning Notification Letters to customers, those whom are suspected of internet piracy, during “the latter half of 2015“. Over a year’s delay from the previous “early” 2014 target.

Internet provider BE Broadband (aka – BE Unlimited), which is now owned by BSkyB (Sky Broadband), has been told by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that they can no longer claim to offer “unlimited downloads” after the ISP threatened to disconnect customers that make heavy use of their service.

The Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) responsible for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, has proposed a new EU “safeguard” to ensure that broadband ISPs and mobile operators give every citizen a “guarantee of access to the full and open internet, without any blocking or throttling of competing services“.

Customers of Virgin Media’s cable broadband and TV network in Portsmouth on the south coast of England could be left without service for up to three days after contractors conducting roadworks cut through one of the operators vital cables. Separately Virgin are also testing a new Traffic Management policy on the 100Mbps+ package.

The latest anecdotal monthly study of consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk has found that the average download speed in the United Kingdom has fallen from 19.014Mbps in April to 18.180Mbps in May 2013. Average upload speeds also hit 2.881Mbps (down from 3.068Mbps).
