UPDATE UK Gov Touts £10m Competitive Fund to Boost Rural Broadband

The Government’s Treasury has today announced a new £10 Million “competitive fund” that aims to “test innovative solutions to deliver superfast broadband services to the most difficult to reach areas“, which sounds a lot like another attempt to do what DEFRA’s £20m Rural Community Broadband Fund (RCBF) has often struggled to achieve.

The CEO of Business ISP XLN Telecom, Christian Nellemann, has said that the national rollout of superfast broadband technology is “crucial” to the United Kingdom’s small and medium sized businesses but called for the government to stop helping BT “maintain a monopoly on fibre services“.

Ofcom Claims 16 Percent of UK Internet Users Make Illegal Downloads

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released a new study into online copyright infringement (internet piracy), which estimates that 16% of UK internet users aged 12+ have consumed at least one item of online content illegally between August-October 2012 and 5% “exclusively consumed illegal content“.

UPD Wales UK to Close Popular GBP4m Broadband Support Scheme

The Welsh Government’s semi-popular £4m Broadband Support Scheme, which provided cash grants worth up to £1,000 to help those living in the most digitally isolated parts of Wales (UK) gain access to faster internet services, will come to a close on 31st March 2013.
