Two press adverts and a poster for JT‘s 4G based Mobile network on the Channel Island of Guernsey have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after they “misleadingly” claimed that the provider offered the “fastest network“. Rival operators Airtel (Vodafone) and Sure disagreed.

The Local Government Association, which represents around 370 councils across England and Wales, has warned that the way broadband ISPs advertise their service speeds is particularly “misleading” for consumers in rural areas. Instead they want providers’ to promote “average” speeds and to also include upload speeds into their promotions.

Lord Smith of Finsbury (Chris Smith), who is Chairman of the United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Agency, has put down another complaint against ISPs that promote slower hybrid-fibre FTTC (VDSL) connections as “fibre optic broadband“. Apparently it’s because pure FTTP/H lines are still too “niche,” but he acknowledges that this may change in the future.

The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that UK ISP Hyperoptic did not break ad rules by describing their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) broadband network as “true fibre” and “full fibre optic broadband“, despite the last bit of connectivity into homes being done over Cat5e copper cable.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a website advert for TalkTalk’s Super Router (Huawei HG633 / HG635) hardware after BT complained that the device was making misleading performance claims, such as one that boasted of delivering “the strongest signal and fastest speeds in the UK.”
