Internet provider PlusNet Business has slashed the price of their standard and superfast broadband + phone bundles by more than half for the first year of service, although Line Rental is still payable at the standard rate of £10.50 +vat per month with pay-as-you-go calls (add £4 for UK Anytime calls).

A new TalkTrack report from marketing research firm Keller Fay has revealed that an estimated 3 million negative opinions are exchanged about one or other of five major broadband ISPs providers each day, with BT and TalkTalk suffering the most from Negative Word of Mouth (NWOM). But the news is better for the rest.

Broadband ISP PlusNet has confirmed that it intends to follow BT’s example (parent company) and launch their own network-level Internet filter to block (censorship) adult and piracy websites, which will most likely replace its bundled McAfee security solution.

Broadband ISP PlusNet, which is owned by BT, has become the latest Internet provider to face criticism today for lax security after it was revealed that their registration form for new customers doesn’t sit behind a secure web (HTTPS) connection and is instead transmitted without encryption.

The latest consumer Internet speed testing data for December 2013 reveals that Virgin Media has maintained its position as the fastest broadband ISP with a download speed of 35.387Mbps (Megabits per second). By contrast the overall national average download speed for all the largest providers was 18.376Mbps and uploads hit 3.320Mbps.

Internet and phone provider PlusNet, which is a semi-independent sibling of BT, has appointed Andy Baker (Aged 41) to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Andy replaces the ISPs current CEO, Jamie Ford, whom is leaving to pursue a role as the Managing Director of IT Services at BT Business.

PlusNet has cut the cost of its ‘up to’ 16Mbps unlimited standard broadband and free weekend calls package to just £2.75 a month for the first 12 months of service (£9.99 thereafter) and their Unlimited Fibre Broadband (up to 76Mbps) has also dropped to £12.75 for the first 4 months (£19.99 thereafter).

An interesting question popped up during BTWholesale’s last Customer Service Forum, which occurred after an ISP raised concerns that BT’s estimate for speeds on its ‘up to’ 80Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) broadband lines were changing after a period of time. This made it difficult for them to determine whether particular users had a speed fault.
