Virgin Media O2 UK 2025 Customer Support at Manchester Island

Broadband, TV and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 has this afternoon announced an organisational change that will see them create a new Consumer unit to cover trading, propositions, digital, data and insights, customer service and retail. The new unit will be led by Lyssa McGowan OBE, who joins the executive team on 8th July as CEO of Consumer, reporting directly to Lutz Schüler.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today announced that it will skip a Phase 1 review of the proposed £2bn acquisition (here) of alternative full fibre UK broadband operator Netomnia (Substantial Group) by nexfibre (Liberty Global, Telefónica and InfraVia), which will instead see them skip right to a deeper Phase 2 competition investigation.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has warned customers that fraudsters are using a “new” phishing tactic to steal their private personal and security details (i.e. granting them access to their MyO2 accounts), which involves criminals posing as the telecoms company while claiming that the customers’ SIM cards are about to expire.

Back in May 2026 we reported (here) that broadband ISP Virgin Media Business (VMB) were preparing to introduce new packages for small business customers that would offer symmetric speeds via their latest XGS-PON based full fibre (FTTP) network at speeds of up to 2Gbps (2,000Mbps). ISPreview has spotted that they’ve now quietly introduced the new plans.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have this morning set out their new Green Transition Plan, which claims to reveal how it will achieve Net Zero carbon emissions across its full value chain, while reducing its environmental impact, by their current target for the end of 2040.

Mobile provider Tesco Mobile, which is one of the UK’s largest virtual (mvno) mobile network operators and home to a customer base of close to 6 million, is reportedly looking to expand their existing partnership by pondering a giffgaff style move into offering full fibre broadband packages.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning revealed that they will start switching off their “decades-old” 2G network starting in Summer 2029. The move follows their “successful” 3G switch off programme, which was completed at the end of 2025. But removing 2G is a slower and more complex process due to the many services that still depend upon it.

The UK Government has confirmed that a total of 140 publicly-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across the United Kingdom (up from 100 at the end of 2025), which includes new sites in England, Wales and Scotland as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But more are set to follow before 2027.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that their Direct-to-Device (D2D) based O2 Satellite service (here), which for £3 extra per month enables normal Smartphones to connect to their mobile network via Starlink’s cell-focused broadband satellites, now also works on Google Pixel devices (phones).

Mobile and internet provider giffgaff, which initially launched their full fibre broadband packages via nexfibre’s national network in September 2025 (here), has confirmed to ISPreview that new customers in many Fibre Up (Project Mustang) areas on Virgin Media’s national FTTP (XGS-PON) network can now also take their packages.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today complained that “outdated planning rules” in the capital city have forced them to switch off “dozens of mobile sites” (not all at once), which they say often leaves busy areas “blighted by poor quality mobile coverage” (i.e. operators are “forced” to remove kit faster than they can replace it).

One of ISPreview’s eagle-eyed readers recently spotted that mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) had uploaded an interesting new page on their website, which doesn’t appear to have been meant for public consumption and depicted three new full fibre (FTTP) broadband packages under the ‘O2 Broadband’ branding.
