ADSLGuide spots that the European Commission (EC) has authorised, under EU state aid rules, a public broadband coverage project for the East/West Midlands and South West England, which are currently underserved:
The Commission concluded that the aid was not likely to cause undue distortion of competition within the Single Market and was therefore compatible with EC Treaty state aid rules (Article 87).BT may currently serve most areas through ADSL, but some remain uncovered and these are the places to be targeted by a Rural Broadband Access Project.
Sadly little else is known at this stage, such as the exact areas and technology to be used.
