The amount of
Wi-Fi networks in London have increased by 160% since 2006, going from 2,747 access points last year to a staggering 7,130 today. The RSA's survey results place London ahead of USA rival New York (49% growth), which is home to 6,371.
Typically the figures include both private networks and that of public hotspots, with the latter accounting for just 471 of the total figure. However just 48% of the 7,130 figure were using the strongest form of security on their network, with many others continuing to use the flawed WEP method.
Interestingly 30% of London's
Wi-Fi networks are still based on the default (out-of-the-box) settings that they shipped with. This is notorious for making such systems easier to attack. Curiously the same figure last year stood at 22%. More details
