The latest research from BT has revealed that 70% of 11-16 year olds from broadband households prefer to communicate online, with two thirds choosing Instant Messaging over SMS (text messaging):
Instant Messenger (IM) is an online facility that lets a group of friends communicate privately, in real time. Teenagers surveyed commented that IM was their favoured way to talk to their friends, as it is usually cheaper and faster than text messaging as well as giving them a sense of privacy.
Many parents mirrored their childrens views stating that they felt happy with IM because it offers a safe environment and lets their children keep in touch with friends without them hogging the phone or running up large bills.
IM is becoming the technology of the moment with teenagers feeling they are missing out if they dont use it. Using the internet has clearly become a regular activity for teenagers in broadband homes with 85 per cent using it every day, 76 per cent using it for more than an hour at a time with an average 40 minutes per day spent chatting on the internet. Furthermore, The Future Foundation predicts that half of all UK homes will have broadband internet access by 2009, rising to 60 per cent by 2013.
Paul Flatters, chief executive officer, Future Foundation said: If text was the unpredicted most popular use of the mobile phone for this generation then Instant Messaging is its online equivalent. Instant Messaging may never completely replace texting, but its clearly having a big impact among children with PC access."
