Datawind has launched a new version of its PocketSurfer device, which dedicates itself to offering pure web and e-mail surfing facilities. The PocketSurfer 2R is an enhancement of the previous model, including additional GPS, touch pad navigation, backlit QWERTY keyboard and a more rugged case:
However the main change appears to be the price and Internet access plans, which are based off an enhanced data connection to Vodafone's older GPRS (2G) network. The 2R will set you back £199.99 and includes 20 hours per month of free Internet access for one year. There is also an 'L' option for £149.99 without the GPS capabilities.
Once the first year is past owners will need to pay £39.99 to extend the access or £59.99 for a lifetime of "unlimited" surfing. The 'R' series has also been designed with data roaming in mind, costing £29.99 for 600 minutes of access in the EU and USA.
Despite its limited GPRS network and small 5 inch - 640 * 240 display, the PocketSurfer 2 has become quite popular over the years. Unfortunately even its newest sibling is fast becoming outclassed by a new generation of tiny netbooks (Asus Eee PC etc.). The PS2R weights 174g and is sized at 152 x 75 x 15mm.
