The latest
Point Topic research has revealed that 25% of workplaces now have broadband download speeds of over 10Mbps, which compares with 18% during October last year. Meanwhile 15% have already adopted services capable of speeds 'up to' 50Mbps and many expect to go even faster in the future:
Over 800,000 workplaces will be in the market for more bandwidth, says Tim Johnson, senior analyst at
Point Topic.
45% of UK premises expect to want more speed within the next two to three years and 7% significantly more.
Remote access, remote helpdesks, video conferencing and VOIP are all becoming more embedded in day to day organisational use. These applications are the primary drivers for the increasing speeds organisations require now and in the future, concludes Johnson.
Naturally only the bigger businesses will need the fastest speeds, with 61% of respondents from medium to large operations expecting such an outcome. This compares with just 39% of smaller firms.
In terms of actual speed - 21% of businesses have a connection capable of less than 2Mbps, 33% run at up to 8Mbps, 12% had 10Mbps, 6% are on 100Mbps, 5% use 50Mbps and just 2% reported a broadband speed of over 100Mbps.
