Sky Broadband Adopts New Child Protection System

Posted: 28th Nov, 2008 By: MarkJ
Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has chosen to adopt a new online child protection system from Crisp, which will help to provide its "Anti-Grooming Engine" (AGE) software to Sky and non-Sky customers visiting the Sky.com website.

The software, known officially as 'Sky Parental Alert', works by interacting with the users PC's Internet activities - monitoring conversations that take place in Instant Messaging programmes, chat rooms, social networking sites and online games.

When Sky Parental Alert detects a potentially inappropriate conversation, it will alert parents by email or text message (SMS). However, only the parts of conversations the system identifies as inappropriate or potentially dangerous can be seen by parents, hence protecting young people’s privacy:

Sandy Winarko, Sky’s online Senior Product Manager said: “Sky is committed to protecting the security and safety of our online users, especially children. Parents often worry about their children’s safety online, as children use the Internet everyday for education, entertainment, and communication. However, whilst today’s teenage generation have grown up using the Internet, most of their parents are less familiar with the types of web services their children are using and the dangers lurking.

Sky Parental Alert features the comprehensive functionality of Crisp’s anti-grooming and anti-abuse technology, which goes far beyond website blocking and basic keyword searches. Parents can now have the peace of mind to give their children the freedom to access web services they want without having their safety compromised.
”

Sky Parental Alert can be downloaded from Sky's Security Centre at http://www.sky.com/securitycentre .
