BTs trials of symmetric (same speed both ways) broadband SDSL has been joined by UK ISP Zen Internet:
Zen Joins Broadband Symmetric Trial and Launches Pre-registration
*Broadband Symmetric, also known as SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line), differs from ADSL - the current standard in popular broadband provision - in that upstream and downstream speeds are exactly the same.
ADSL upstream speed is restricted to 256Kps across all services, regardless of provider, even if the downstream speed is as high as 2Mbps or 'two meg'.
SDSL allows users to send (upload files, for example) at the same speed they receive (download files, for example). SDSL is sometimes referred to as "same speed both ways" broadband.
SDSL and ADSL technologies provide complementary solutions which are suited to different applications. ADSL is ideal for most home users who generally want to download material (view Web sites, download files), whereas SDSL benefits situations where there is a more equal flow of data, as with Net Meeting applications and business e-mail.
SDSL really comes into its own for SMEs looking to operate virtual private networks (VPNs) or wanting to host servers at their own premises - in such circumstances, 'same-speed' broadband offers businesses a cost effective alternative to private (leased line) circuits.
Today's news from Zen follows BT's announcement (Tuesday 20th May) that 100 exchanges have been SDSL enabled and are ready for trial, and allows Zen Internet to offer pre-registration for anyone wanting to try the two-way enhanced service for themselves.
Online pre-registration for the Zen trial is available at http://www.zenbroadband.com/sdsl where users will also find pricing details, and a listing of exchanges that have been enabled to support Broadband Symmetric.
"SDSL is a valuable development in Zen's Broadband product portfolio and we view our participation in the national trials as vitally important. We will be assigning all possible resources to assisting in the development of this new UK service prior to its full launch later this year" said Zen's Marketing Manager, Ian Buckley.
