BT has urged the Scottish Executive (SE) to be more ambitious with its broadband targets. The operator fears that not doing so could widen the "digital divide" between urban and rural areas:
The Scottish Executive has pledged to spend £24m on ensuring there is broadband coverage to "at least 70%" of the population by the end of 2003.
But Bob Downes, BTs director for Scotland, said the Executive should not settle for less than the UK-wide target of 90% coverage and should invest more money and resources on promoting broadband in rural areas.
Broadband, which is seen as important for business as more work is carried out online, is still unavailable in many rural areas of Scotland.
Downes said the Executive should share the cost with BT of gearing up the network of telephone exchanges for broadband in regions where there is no commercial logic for the company to do so itself.
