Global ISP AOL is, having only just released v8 of its client-side software, already planning the next revision (v9). The ISP is expected to continue its focus on broadband and increased multimedia playback capabilities:
There are, of course, other developments of note in the second beta release of an upgrade officially labelled AOL 9.0 and exotically code-named Blue Hawaii. AOLs email facilities have been much criticised in the past, and the new version, whilst not revolutionising the old system, provides some increased functionality and significantly comes loaded with much more sophisticated spam protection software. A new cache system, Velocity, will also be featured in the upgrade and is designed to speed up web page download times.
The most significant developments, however, remain those supporting multimedia content. AOL needs such features in order to retain a hold on its 34m narrowband subscribers if, or rather when, these upgrade to broadband.Typically those of us in Europe probably won't see the latest client until the third or fourth quarter 2003.
