Top 12 Online Viruses For February'04

Posted: 03rd Mar, 2004 By: MarkJ
Anti-virus firm Central Command has once again, albeit a day or two later than usual, posted its list of the top twelve most prolific Internet viruses for the past month. No surprise seeing MyDoom dominate, although that will change for March:

Central Command Releases Its Dirty Dozen - Top 12 - Computer Viruses For February 2004

Central Command, a leading provider of PC anti-virus software and computer security services today released its monthly listing of the top twelve viruses reported for February, 2004. The report, coined the "Dirty Dozen", is based on the number of virus occurrences confirmed through Central Command's Emergency Virus Response Team®.

The table below represents the most prevalent viruses for February 2004, number one being the most frequent.

Ranking. Virus Name Percentage
1. Worm/MyDoom.A 65.3%
2. Worm/Sober.C 8.8%
3. Worm/Netsky.B 6.4%
4. Worm/Netsky.C 3.5%
5. Worm/Bagle.B 1.6%
6. Worm/MiMail.I 1.3%
7. Worm/BugBear.B 1.2%
8. Worm/Bagle.E 0.7%
9. Worm/MiMail.J 0.6%
10. Worm/Klez.E 0.6%
11. Worm/Dumaru.AB 0.5%
12. Worm/Bagle.C 0.4%
Others 9.1%

"There was a changing of the guard so to speak in February. The once dominate worms like Klez, Yaha, Gibe, and Nimda have all but fallen to the waste side in favor of a younger breed of worms," said Steven Sundermeier, Vice President of Products and Services at Central Command, Inc. Members of the Klez, Yaha, Gibe and Nimda families have all shared in holding the top position in the Dirty Dozen.

"We're also witnessing a new disturbing trend: well-organized virus writing capable of accomplishing their premeditated objectives." Worm/MyDoom.A successfully launched a denial of service (DOS) attack on the website www.sco.com. Worm/Netsky.B, Worm/Netsky.C, and Worm/Bagle.B effectively spread across the Internet while infecting thousands of systems worldwide.

Vexira Antivirus has been updated for 1248 different viruses, worms and other malicious applications during the month of February 2004.
