Following on from yesterdays '
Internet Connectivity' report the governments ecommerce minister, Stephen Timms, has predicted that by the summer our country could have 2 Million broadband subscribers:
Take-up has accelerated to 32,000 new connections a week, taking the total number of user to 1.5 million, according to figures released to coincide with the government's response to last November's Broadband Stakeholder Group (BSG) report.
'I think the current trajectory will continue and if that is the case we will be at two million users by June. Given that it took until last October to get to one million users, it would be a significant achievement,' he said.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has accepted the 15 recommendations made by the BSG, including the appointment of a dedicated programme manager with overall responsibility for implementing the government's broadband strategy. It's worth pointing out that the goal could be hampered by the soon-to-end BTWholesale discount on ADSL activations.
New services, such as BTs planned 256Kbps ADSL product and extended reach update, could help to offset this. More @
