The governments communications minister, Stephen Timms, yesterday gave an enthusiastic speech about how UK broadband is shaping up. He was speaking at the Informal Broadband Council in Italy:
'More than three quarters of the UK are now able to access broadband services. Our target is for the UK to be the most extensive and competitive broadband market in the G7 by 2005,' said Timms. 'However, we are in no position to be complacent, we still need to improve access for those living in more rural locations. That's why we established the Rural Broadband Unit to focus on increasing access in those areas.'
Timms also said broadband subscriptions continue to grow at a rate of 30,000 a week. Figures from the DTI put the broadband-connected UK populace at 2,335,000 as of the end of July, with access available for 76 per cent as of June.
At the same event Commissioner Erkki Liikanen offered a pan-European perspective: 'In just one year broadband connections in the EU almost doubled: from 9 million in July 2002, to 17.5 million in July 2003. This means growth of almost 100 per cent. And we have four countries with a higher penetration rate than the USA.'
