The Respect for Film campaign group has published the results of its latest Oxford Economics piracy survey, which revealed that illegal film downloads and sales were costing the UK economy $846m (£614m) a year in lost revenue.

Bizzarely the BBC has admitted to hijacking (hacking) 22,000 personal computers without user consent. The computers were then turned into a botnet, though allegedly no personal information was accessed on any of the infected systems.

Virgin Mobile and T-Mobile have won praise in the latest Mobile Broadband survey carried out by the Which? consumer magazine. Virgin came top for mobile usability, tied with O2 on customer service and was also the easiest to set-up.

Business ISP Opal (TalkTalk), which recently launched a new up to 24Mbps ADSL2+ based broadband service from £10 per month, has published a new report on regional broadband speeds. The study found that Central London (EC, WC and W postcodes) lead the way with almost half of the city's businesses able to achieve a connection of between 8 - 24Mbps.

Virgin Media has today released the results of its latest evaluation of web-based speedtests, which found that many such services are still unable to provide an accurate assessment of an ISPs broadband performance. However there were some improvements, with both ourselves and Broadband-Expert now making the grade for testing at up to 50Mbps.

UK ISP Be Broadband (O2) has responded to concerns about the stability of Tiscali's UK service by encouraging the provider’s customers to jump ship and gain a £40 gift credit in the process. The move follows recent news (here) that Tiscali's sale talks with BSkyB had failed, forcing the operator to suspend shares and prepare for an uncertain future.

New research carried out by Opinium for Moneysupermarket has revealed that the average Brit subscribes to seven Internet services, such as online banking or shopping sites, while almost 30% subscribe to even more. However 18% still used the same password for all their accounts.

The latest study by Redshift Research for UK business ISP Pipex (Tiscali) has revealed that the majority of small businesses (79%) use their home broadband connection for professional use. In contrast, just under half (48%) use pure office/business broadband.
