The
European Parliament has officially approved £4.4 Billion (over two years) in special recession recovery funding for member states. Roughly £265 Million of the total will be allocated to the UK for a combination of investment in new energy projects and improvements to rural broadband infrastructure.
Europe Minister, Caroline Flint, said: "The fact that this injection of cash is targeted on renewable energy and broadband will ensure that we make the European recovery a green and high tech recovery that will make Europe more competitive in the future. Not only will British companies at home benefit from this money, but I believe many UK plcs will also be serious competitors for the new projects that will be available elsewhere in Europe."
Sadly the mail shot didn't include any details about which broadband projects would benefit, although there is no shortage of rural initiatives for the government to choose from.
