UK satellite operator
Avanti Communications today informs us that their HYLAS satellite payload, which is designed to help tackle the UK governments plan to make a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps available to everybody by 2012, has arrived safely at the ISRO satellite assembly facility in India where it is now being integrated into the platform and prepared for launch.
Back in June Avanti informed us in an exclusive interview (
read it here) that HYLAS would be able to deliver UK broadband speeds of up to 8Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. It's still too early to talk about price, although one very speculative report hinted at a figure of £15 per month.
David Williams, Chief Executive of Avanti, said:
“I am pleased that we are now in the final phase of assembly. The demand in the market for satellite broadband is getting stronger every month as can be observed by our recent contract wins. Also the consensus in government, evidenced by this week’s Select Committee Enquiry into broadband, shows that Avanti will be delivering a much needed and highly valued service across Europe.”
Within a few days of arriving in India the first payload panel was successfully integrated and work is reported to be proceeding well. The satellite is currently on track for delivery in Q2 2010.
