Analyst firm Point Topic UK has released its latest World Broadband Statistics Report for the third quarter of 2009, highlighting a worldwide growth in broadband ISP subscribers of 3.18% between Q3 and Q2. This represents a decrease in broadband growth over the same period last year, when it grew by 4.15%. There are now 451.94 million broadband subscribers globally.

Ofcom has published several new reports today that chart the different methods of deploying fibre optic broadband ISP services in the UK and their respective market impacts. The reports place a great deal of focus on BT, IFNL and i3 Group and their use of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology for UK 100Mbps FTTH / P deployments.

Two members of the House of Lords - Lord Corbett of Castle Vale and Lord Erroll - have blasted the "buck passing" of customer fault reports between ISPs and BT, the misleading state of broadband speed advertising and the inability to ensure a minimum quality of service for the government’s commitment to a 2Mbps minimum UK broadband speed by 2012.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has announced the first successful live trial of next generation Long Term Evolution ( LTE ) Mobile Broadband technology in the Slough area, where the operators headquarters are based. A peak cell download speed of 150Mbps (Megabits per second) was measured during the trial, though future 4G generations of LTE could hit 1Gbps.

Broadband provider TalkTalk ( AOL , Tiscali etc.) has announced a number of new service and price changes that will take effect on or after 1st January 2010. Firstly the price of their Essentials phone and broadband package will rise from £17.74 to £18.48 per month, which is mostly due to the return of a higher 17.5% rate of VAT. There will also be a speed increase for all customers.

Analyst firm Point Topic has posted an interesting breakdown of how it expects the governments £0.50p +vat per month tax (Next Generation Fund) on all fixed phone lines (except low-income social telephony services) to work. The tax itself is designed to help finance the roll-out of future broadband services to 90% of Britain by 2017 (raising an estimated £175m per year).

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which does not include countries such as China and Russia, has updated its latest semi-global broadband subscriber statistics with data covering the period to June 2009. The top 5 largest countries by broadband subscriber size were - 1. USA (81,170,428), 2. Japan (30,927,003), 3. Germany (24,043,0000), 4. France (18,675,000) and the UK held 5th place on 17,742,676.

The UK HM Treasury has finally opened a consultation to examine implementation of its new £0.50p +vat per month Landline Duty / tax (Next Generation Fund) on all fixed phone lines, which is designed to help finance the roll-out of Next Generation Access to 90% of Britain by 2017 (raising an estimated £175m per year).

Regulator Ofcom has ruled to open spectrum in the 59 - 64GHz band for use by Fixed Wireless Systems (FWS) under a licence exempt authorisation approach. The move coincides with an announcement by the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig), which has just developed the first specification for a new Wi-Fi (802.11) compatible wireless network that can support data transmission rates of up to 7Gbps via the 60GHz band.

Liberal Democrat peer, Tim Clement-Jones has tabled an amendment to the Digital Economy Bill to delete controversial Clause 17 which would allow the Government's Secretary of State (i.e. Peter Mandelson) to change Internet related copyright law in the future without any further debate or scrutiny.

The London Internet Exchange (LINX) suffered a major failure during yesterday afternoon after one of its crucial network switches was knocked offline by an unspecified software fault. Hundreds of UK and European Broadband ISPs connect through LINX's HUB and the impact upon Internet traffic during the fault is clearly visible in their usage graph below.

Ofcom has released its latest quarterly (Q2 2009) Telecommunications Market Data Tables (Download .PDF), which offers a breakdown of total small business and residential broadband connections. At the end of Q2 2009 there were 17,739,000 residential and small business UK broadband connections, 1.1 million (6.9%) more than a year ago.

The latest statistics from Point Topic , a UK broadband analyst , has revealed that global broadband Internet TV ( IPTV ) service growth in early adopter countries (US, France, Hong Kong etc.) remains "steady rather than spectacular". There are currently (Q2 2009) 26.3 million IPTV subscribers worldwide, which is up from 17.1 million (+53%) a year previously.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk UK ( Tiscali , AOL UK etc. ) is to expand its Customer Services Centre in the Irish County of Waterford (TalkTalk Waterford) by hiring new staff for 50 full time and 10 part time positions. TalkTalk Waterford already has 700 staff and operates support for both TalkTalk and AOL UK.

The UK Labour governments chancellor, Alistair Darling, has used his pre-budget report today to green light the controversial £0.50p (+vat) per month tax - Next Generation Fund - on all fixed phone lines to help develop future superfast broadband networks. Darling hopes the levy, which should raise around £175m per year, will help next gen broadband services reach 90% of the UK by the end of 2017.

Regulator Ofcom UK has today released its annual 2009 Consumer Experience report. The study reveals that satisfaction with broadband speeds has increased (81% satisfied compared to 79% in 2008), while bundled services (broadband, TV, phone and mobile) have continue to help drive down prices.
