The famous UK singer songwriter and board member of the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), Billy Bragg, has come out strongly against new proposals in the recent Digital Economy Bill, which threaten to disconnect illegal p2p music file sharers from their broadband ISPs.

Communications provider Entanet UK, which supplies several ISPs with resold and wholesale broadband services, has concluded its three week trial of traffic prioritisation measures (original news) and deemed it to have been a success. As a result the provider has decided to keep using the system.

Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, has issued its latest 'Internet usage in 2009 - Households and Individuals' report of the 27 EU member states. It reveals that UK broadband Internet access has jumped by 7% this past year to 69% (EU average 56%) and the proportion of households with internet access topped 77% (EU average 65%); just behind front the runners - Netherlands (90%), Luxembourg (87%), Sweden (86%), Denmark (83%), Germany (79%) and Finland (78%).

ZIP IT, BLOCK IT, FLAG IT. That is the message behind today's launch of the first UK internet safety strategy - 'Click Clever Click Safe' , which aims to help children and young people stay safe online. The strategy has been drawn up by the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) and supported by a coalition of Government, industry and charities working together.

Daisy, a Lancashire-based telecoms and broadband ISP, has posted its latest Q3 2009 results, which highlighted a loss of £2.1m for the first 9 months of this year and plans to cut staff from 1150 in August 2009 to 850 by March 2010. Interestingly Daisy does not foresee its current problems as being an obstacle to future acquisitions of rival providers.

BT Wholesale is reported to be developing a new video content delivery network for UK ISPs - 'BT Content Connect'. The service would essentially store (cache) popular video content on the ISP's own network as opposed to dragging it over several Internet servers to reach the user; this lowers congestion, cuts costs and speeds up performance.

New research from broadband ISP TalkTalk has revealed that faster broadband connections could be to blame for making us increasingly impatient with both the slow nature of the offline world and some elements of the online one. Some 70% of us confess to “losing it” if we have to wait longer than one minute for a web page to load, which is one heck of a slow site.

Customers attempting to contact UK ISP Be Broadband could be in for a bit of frustration after the provider’s phone lines were knocked out of action just before midday today. BE has apologised for the problem and is "urgently working" to get it resolved ASAP.

Just a small snippet of news for anybody that is interested. Small broadband ISP Andrews and Arnold Ltd. ( AAISP ) has finally joined the UK Internet Service Providers Association ( ISPA ). Every ISP that becomes a part of the organisation must abide by its rules, which can act as a kind of quality assurance for customers of related services.

Google has launched Google Public DNS, a FREE alternative to using your UK broadband ISPs own Domain Name Servers (DNS) to translate IP addresses into human readable form or vice versa. For example, a DNS server can convert an IP number (e.g. 123.56.23.89) into a domain name like Google.com.

The Northern Ireland Executive appears to have bested the UK government's Universal Service Commitment (USC) to bring a minimum broadband connection speed of 2Mbps to everybody in the country by 2012. Instead N.I has gone one step further and promised a minimum of 2Mbps for rural areas and 10Mbps for urban areas by May 2011.

Mobile operator Three (3) has cut the price of its entry level Mobile Broadband package, which includes a 1GB monthly usage allowance, from £10 to just £7.50 per month on either an 18 or 24 month contract option; both include a FREE USB Modem (Dongle). Those wanting the 1GB package with a MiFi (portable Wi-Fi wireless 3G router) device will also now pay just £9.50 per month.

Kingston Communications UK (ISP Karoo , Eclipse Internet etc.), a supplier of telecommunications, broadband ISP and telephony services, has started a new campaign to make customer service calls FREE across the UK. The campaign highlights new research by YouGov, which found that 87% of people believe they shouldn’t have to pay to report a service problem.

A new study has revealed that the average UK adult spends 68 hours online and over 7 hours using their mobile phone every month. This equates to over a month (34 days) a year online and three and a half days per year on the phone.

Major Internet giants, including Google, Yahoo, eBay and Facebook, have issued an open letter that strongly rejects Clause 17 of the UK government's new Digital Economy Bill, which would give the Secretary of State (i.e. Peter Mandelson) sweeping powers to amend Copyright law without hardly any debate.

Broadband ISP Fast.co.uk has today announced the surprise acquisition of former rival Firenet, a small but established broadband, dialup and hosting provider with a contact centre based in Ireland. Firenet had recently fallen off the map somewhat with a few customers complaining about service and support problems.

Prominent Privacy Campaigner, Alexander Hanff (NoDPI), has claimed that the recently announced trial of Detica's new CView Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology (here) by broadband ISP Virgin Media UK could be illegal. CView is designed to measure copyright infringement on a network by monitoring customers’ data traffic and ISPs could soon find themselves being forced to adopt it.

The local Haringey Council for Muswell Hill (North London) has ordered BT to move 20 of its new street-side cabinets, which are being used to trial the operators 'up to' 40Mbps next generation FTTC fibre optic broadband services in the area. BT has also been ordered to repaint them from Green to Black so that they fit better with the areas aesthetics.
