BT UK's new Infinity range of 'up to' 40Mbps next generation fibre optic ( FTTC ) broadband packages, which are set to go live on Monday, will impose the same tough Traffic Management restrictions on P2P (file sharing) usage and heavy users as its existing ( ADSL and ADSL2+ ) services.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) has issued its latest Digital Music Report 2010, which reveals that global digital music trade revenues reached £2.6 billion (up 12%) in 2009. However, despite the music industry increasing its digital revenues by 940% since 2004, "illegal" P2P file sharing by customers of broadband ISPs apparently attributed to an overall global market (physical and digital media) decline of around 30% in the same period.

The Vice President of games publisher Electronic Arts in Northern Europe, Keith Ramsdale, told a Westminster eForum yesterday that the government’s plan to deliver a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps to everybody in the UK by 2012 (Universal Service Commitment) is not "ambitious enough" and warned that the service needed to be both faster and offer more capacity.

Broadband provider TalkTalk UK ( AOL UK , Opal ) has today published the results of a new survey, which found that nearly a fifth of Britons believe the Internet will have a bigger impact on their lives this year than in 2009. This rose to 25% in the North West, 22% in the West Midlands and 21% in Wales.

BT Retail has today officially revealed the first consumer pricing for its next generation superfast (up to 40Mbps download and 10Mbps upload speed) fibre optic ( FTTC ) broadband packages - BT Infinity. Prices start at just £19.99 per month (20GB usage allowance) and will be made available to new and existing BT customers from 25th January.

Customers of T-Mobile and Vodafone UK using one of the operators MiFi (2352) devices, essentially a portable battery powered wireless router that has been designed to distribute their Mobile Broadband service over a Wi-Fi link, should be aware they suffer from a security vulnerability that could allow access to a remote hacker.

Long held plans by Virgin Media UK and Universal Music to launch a DRM-free music download and streaming service for broadband customers could finally come to fruition in July. New reports suggest that VM will call their service MusicFish, although this has not yet been officially confirmed.

According to a recent survey by ORC International, a market research consultancy, more than two thirds of us filed complaints with companies supplying our energy, telecoms and digital TV last year. However it was UK broadband ISPs that drew most of the flak, with 35% of us complaining about their services during the past 12 months.

The latest Eurostat statistics reveal that 93% of enterprises with ten or more employees in Europe (EU27) had access to the Internet and 82% of enterprises had a fixed broadband Internet connection. By comparison 91% of UK enterprises with the same number of staff had Internet access and 85% had a fixed broadband connection.

The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk, AOL UK , Opal ) has warned that it does not plan any new investment into broadband IPTV services, which were inherited alongside its £236m acquisition of Tiscali UK last year. Existing customers of Tiscali TV (HomeChoice) will no doubt be concerned about the future, although the service is known to have been in decline for awhile.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today given Virgin Media a ticking off after a direct mailing advert for its TV and phone service used a misleading comparison table to highlight cost savings against Sky. However the comparison made a number of blunders, not least by failing to mention the cost of VM's broadband service against a product that included Sky Broadband .

The British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) has hit back at UK broadband ISPs ( BT and TalkTalk ) who claim that the cost of introducing tough new measures to tackle file sharing piracy could push up customer bills by an extra £25 per year. Two reports commissioned by the music industry have now put that figure at closer to 24p per individual ISP subscriber.

Prices start from £7.99 per month for an unbundled 'up to' 24Mbps service with a 3GB usage allowance (unlimited off-peak).

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has re-launched its Access Gateway device, which uses Femtocell (Access Point Base Station) technology to help extend the indoor coverage and reception of its 3G voice and Mobile Broadband service, as the Sure Signal; it’s even reduced the price too.

The CTO of Internet security giant Trend Micro, Dave Rand, has called for UK and EU governments to adopt tougher legislation against SPAM (junk email). He also urged Internet Service Providers (ISP) to help combat the problem by blocking email on port 25 and informing users when their computers begin unwittingly distributing masses of junk messages (zombie systems / botnets).

The Number Resource Organization (NRO) reports that the Internet has passed a critical stage, with remaining IPv4 addresses having fallen to just 9% (400 Million spare); IPv4 addresses are now expected to be completely depleted before the end of 2011. The news may get repeated each year but it is no less important and could result in serious problems for UK broadband ISPs that fail to adapt.

The Carphone Warehouse ( TalkTalk , AOL UK , Opal ), which recently consumed Tiscali UK into its group for just £236m, has posted a new Trading Statement that reveals its latest third quarter results. The group managed to raise its total broadband subscriber base from 4.119m customers in Q2-2009 to 4.155m in Q3 (+36,000); more than double the +15,000 net additions seen between Q1 and Q2 last year.

The former founder of OiNK (Alan Ellis, aged 26), a once popular broadband BitTorrent (P2P) file sharing tracker website that hosted links to copyright content such as music and films, was last week found not guilty on charges of "conspiracy to defraud" by the Teesside Crown Court. The case set a precedent but also reminded us of the inherent problems with tackling online piracy among customers of UK broadband ISPs.

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, has welcomed the Government's recently re-announced 'Home Access' (formerly 'Broadband for All') scheme. The initiative apparently resonates with the Institute's own Savvy Citizens campaign, which encourages people to get the most out of computers and the Internet.
