Communications and TV provider Virgin Media has launched a rather unusual PR assault on its chief rival, BT Retail, by getting fashion model Danielle Lloyd and a bunch of her friends together for a special advertising message about broadband speeds.
"
BT? Fast broadband? My arse!"
Jon James, Virgin Media's Executive Director for Broadband, said:
"Consumers deserve to know the truth; that ADSL broadband, far from speeding up, is slowing down as we reach the end of the line for copper broadband. This cheeky stunt was simply a humorous way to get across a serious message - that customers should demand what they are being promised from their internet providers."
We do agree with this remark: "
customers should demand what they are being promised from their internet providers." Of course that door swings both ways for Virgin Media too, which also has 250,000 or so Virgin.net ADSL / ADSL2+ broadband subscribers on its own service.
It's perhaps not the most tasteful way of promoting a broadband service but is certainly more entertaining than most we've seen, unless you're a woman of course.. in which case the two guys on the end seem a bit lonely.
UPDATE 2:45pmAs one reader reminded us in the comments, peak download speeds are only part of the equation. Upload performance is another critical aspect and in that area Virgin Media usually comes second to O2 and Be Broadband , which use ADSL2+ technology.
