Broadband provider PlusNet has lit almost a full 622Mbps central pipe for customers still on its 'up to' 8Mbps ADSLMAX based BT 20CN network. The move means that those who are not yet with PlusNet's faster 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+ based BT 21CN network should benefit from more capacity and thus improved performance.

It's reported that over 300 Orange UK subscribers have had their personal email addresses exposed after the operator sent a mass customer survey message via the CC field. Obviously they should have used the BCC field, which encrypts addresses, but failed to do that.

The Conservative MP for Maidenhead and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Shadow Minister for Women, Theresa May, has blasted BT for excluding Twyford residents in its trial of 'up to' 2Mbps Broadband Enabling Technology (BET). BET was re-introduced last September 2009 (

It used data from 6,000 speedtests carried out during 2009 to conclude that the average speed is just over 1Mbps. It's reported that BT and Ofcom are in discussions that could result in rival ISPs being given access to the UK operator’s fibre optic broadband ducts (underground tubes where fibre optic cable can be run). This would allow BT's competitors to deploy their own fibre optic cable infrastructure without having to dig up any roads, assuming that the costs and regulations were fair.

21st Century Network (21CN) based
Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) product, which can deliver download speeds of up to 24Mbps via ADSL2+ technology, is now available from over 730 exchanges around the UK. 24Mbps products are thus available to half of the country's homes and businesses.
