UK ISP BT has today revealed the latest official list of 303 local telephone exchange locations where its new superfast (up to 100Mbps) fibre optic based broadband services ( FTTC , FTTH / P ) will soon become available from. The move is part of their £1.5bn programme to deliver next generation services into 10 million homes (40% coverage) by summer 2012.

This list marks the latest 5th Phase (or 4b) of BT's nationwide rollout; the exchanges listed below are intended to be enabled between Autumn 2010 and Summer 2011. These locations serve approximately four million customer lines. They follow the first March 2009 release of 29 locations (here), the July 2009 release of a further 69 (here) and the January 2010 release of 63 (here).

BT's primary Fibre-to-the-Cabinet technology ( FTTC ) will deliver a fast fibre optic link to the operators street level cabinets, while the remaining connection (between cabinets and homes) is done using VDSL2 (similar to current ADSL broadband but faster over short distances) through existing copper cable; FTTC will initially deliver speeds of up to 40Mbps, rising to 60Mbps in the future (uploads should reach up to 10Mbps).

A BT spokeswoman informed us that "today’s announcement [signalled] the biggest phase of the BT’s super-fast broadband programme to date". The operator has also released a series of regional press releases this morning to accompany the news, although there will not be a national update like before.

It's worth pointing out that most of these exchanges were unofficially leaked towards the end of February 2010, although we chose not to report on it until BT made them official. This is because some of the exchanges in BT's initial list were not completely confirmed and subject to change/removal.

At present BT's FTTC rollout is still at a very early stage and it will take time for coverage to improve, although it is progressing at a good pace. Indeed there are less than a handful of ISPs currently offering the FTTC service, with BT-Infinity being the most notable. Prices start at just £19.99 per month for an up to 40Mbps (2Mbps upload) package with a 20GB usage allowance (£24.99 for 'unlimited' usage and 10Mbps uploads). Both come with a free installation.
