Mobile operator Three (3) has found that 71% of British people believe portable Wi-Fi access in a car, where up to five passengers can connect to Wi-Fi devices, would be useful for work and entertainment while travelling (except for the driver :smirk:).
The study, which also found that 60% would be more likely or would consider travelling in a taxi if it had Wi-Fi internet access, is conveniently designed to help plug the operators recently launched '
In Car Wi-Fi' product.
Charlotte Blanchard, Director of Products & Services at 3, said:
"We can all relate to the woes of long car trips and we’re always looking at new products and services that connect our customers while on the move. In car Wi-Fi does this, allowing mobile workers to check traffic information and email on route to a meeting, while kids can get on Facebook, watch TV online or download tracks to an iPod Touch while on a road trip".
The Car Wi-Fi product is essentially a rehash of their existing portable MiFi with a few travel accessories bolted on. MiFi is a battery powered wireless router that has been designed to distribute the operators Mobile Broadband ( 3G ) service over a Wi-Fi link.
Priced at £59.99 the In Car Wi-Fi kit includes
• MiFi® Huawei wireless modem
• Mains charger
• In car charger
• Windscreen holder
• 1GB data that lasts up to 30 days.
One potential benefit, sights the survey, is to help keep children occupied while mum or dad drives. Car travel with children is so painful that 54% of British travellers would rather stay home and avoid discovering the UK by road. Almost 10% would rather have root canal therapy than endure car travel with the kids.
