Sky (BSkyB) customers with a Sky Broadband Unlimited and Sky HD TV subscription will soon be able to benefit from the launch of a new FREE Video-on-Demand (VoD) product called
Sky Anytime Plus. The service will come with hundreds of movies and masses of TV shows that can be downloaded anytime you want to the Sky HD box's hard disk.
Sadly related content will only be available in standard definition (SD). Subscribers will be able to plug their Sky Broadband routers into the Sky HD box, while a special wireless device will be offered for those who have their TV and phone line in separate locations.
The Head of Sky's TV Services, Kathryn Downward, told Pocket-lint:"There will be over 1000 hours of entertainment, all movie houses are expected to be on board and we are talking to the [UK] terrestrial channels as well. We hope to offer support for other ISP's in the future, but at launch the service will only be available to Sky Broadband customers."
We've heard the "
hope to offer support for other ISP's in the future" line before from BT Vision and similar platforms (Tiscali TV), although this ability has never manifested. That's a shame but not an unexpected one due to the high costs and difficulty involved with offering VoD content via external internet providers.
The new product will surface as part of an Over The Air (OTA) update sometime later in the year. Sky Anytime Plus is expected to remain a Sky HD only service due to the limitations of older Sky+ boxes. It's a shame they couldn't offer HD content but then Sky and BT's existing copper line based broadband infrastructure really isn't cut out for that.
