BT has announced that its IPTV service - BT Vision, which combines terrestrial
Freeview TV channels via the aerial with
Video-on-Demand (VoD) content delivered over its fixed line broadband ISP service, has entered into an agreement with
NBC Universal for the rights to all the
3D movie titles the studio will release over the next 12 months.
BT has also signed an agreement with
Vertigo to show
StreetDance, the first British movie to be shot in 3D, featuring Diversity, winners of
Britain's Got Talent 2009, and Flawless BGT finalist and Street Dance Champions. Two titles already queued up for BT customers are
Step Up 3D (12) on November 29th 2010 and the animated
Despicable Me (PG) from March 14th 2011.
To see StreetDance in 3D will cost viewers
£5.99 (£4.99 for HD / £3.99 for Standard Definition [SD] quality) and Step Up 3D will also be
£5.99 (£4.99 for HD / £3.99 for SD). You'll also need a BT Total Broadband and or phone bundle package with BT Vision, with prices currently on a special offer and starting at just £7.50 per month.
Marc Watson, CEO of BT Vision, said:
"We already have an extensive catalogue of more than 500 movies in the UK courtesy of our long-term deals with major Hollywood studios and independents like Vertigo. Now Vision viewers can experience films at home in fantastic 3D, thanks to these new deals. This is just the start of 3D on Vision - viewers can expect to hear much more from us in the coming months."
Sadly to view this new content you'll need to be among one of the minority with a hugely expensive 3D capable TV, although
Samsung's 40" LE40C750 is now available for under £790. The future of 3D technology is still very much uncertain and so for now it's only worth getting if you actually happen to be in the market for a new television.
