Ofcom and Samknows UK, its appointed technical Partner for broadband performance testing, have today announced plans to conduct further research into UK fixed-line broadband ISP speeds. Ofcom's previous 2009 report revealed that the average speed in April last year was 4.1Mbps (here).

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed that it is still assessing the prospect of opening a criminal case against BT following the operator’s secret trials of Phorm in 2006/2007. Phorm controversially worked with UK broadband ISPs ( BT , TalkTalk and Virgin Media ) to develop a system that would monitor what websites you viewed for use in targeted advertising campaigns, though many likened its service to Spyware.

The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) has estimated that plans by the UK government, which aims to make a minimum broadband speed of 2Mbps available to everybody in the country by 2012 (i.e. Universal Service Commitment), could be worth £1.4 Billion through additional online sales alone.

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has reported its latest fourth quarter 2009 results today and revealed plans to roll-out a superfast 100Mbps broadband package by the end of 2010 (prices TBA). The operators total broadband subscriber base increased from 4,027,400 in Q3 to 4,103,500 at the end of last year.

The northern city of Leeds is set to become one of UK's fastest locations for business and financial institutions after expansion plans for a 100Mbps high speed fibre optic broadband network were revealed. Local telecommunications firm aql now aims to rollout connectivity throughout the city's business district.

The latest estimate from Point Topic reveals that by the end of September 2009 Voice-over-IP ( VoIP - Internet voice calling service ) subscriptions had grown by 15% in the first 3 quarters of the year to pass the 100 million milestone. The UK placed 10th in the chart with 2,950,000 (does not include softclients like Skype).

Consumer magazine Which? has claimed that BT's renewable broadband and phone contracts could be breaking the law on distance selling regulations by "not providing sufficient cancellation rights when existing customers sign up to renewable contracts over the phone". In a related study Which? Also found that most people weren’t aware of how much it would cost to cancel their contract early.

European and UK Government plans to introduce new copyright laws, which could result in consumers who are "suspected" of downloading illegal content being suspended from their broadband ISP, have once again kicked up a fuss between internet providers, the music industry and consumer groups.

Hotel chain City Inn will offer its guests access to a new 'up to' 100Mbps broadband network thanks to a backbone supplied by Easynet Global Services. Guests at City Inn’s six UK hotels will now have access to high speed wireless Wi-Fi internet, which will be provided via a dedicated line, ensuring bandwidth is always available.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld two complaints by ISP Sky Broadband (BSkyB) against a direct mailing advert for products from Virgin Media . In the advert, which listed ten reasons why VM was better than Sky, the operator claimed that: "Delivering TV, broadband and phone down the same fibre optic cable is better value and keeps everything in one simple bill." Naturally Sky did not agree.

UK Government plans to put a 50p +vat per month tax on all fixed phone lines, which would help to fund the rollout of next generation broadband services to 90% of the country by 2017, could "severely effect" small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) according to Outsourcery.

The i3 Group (H2O Networks) Fibrecity project has today revealed which three UK ISPs - Fibreband, Velocity 1 and Vispa - will be among the first to offer its new 100Mbps fibre optic ( FTTH ) broadband services to residents of Bournemouth city on the south coast. The providers will all be offering telephone, TV and superfast broadband services costing from as little as £9.99 per month!

Ofcom has published a new report from Analysys Mason, 'Fibre Capacity Limitations in Access Networks' (PDF), which examines a common misconception that next generation fibre optic broadband networks will not suffer from the same capacity issues that often ail existing technologies.

Pennine Telecom has completed the first phase of a new scheme that will see 1,000 children in the Manchester area being given FREE home Internet access via a mesh wireless ( Wi-Fi ) broadband connection. The £140k project between Bury Council and Broad Oak Sports College said that the first phase covered 120 homes and there are eight more phases to go.

A new survey of over 1,400 UK people has revealed that 20% of respondents do not know what the terms of either their broadband ISPs download limits or Fair Usage Policy (FUP) are. Furthermore nearly one third said that their ISP's Traffic Management policy was not explained during the signup process.

The Business Innovation and Skills Committee (BISC), which is appointed by the House of Commons to examine the administration, expenditure and policy of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), has branded government proposals for a 50p +vat per month broadband tax on all fixed phone lines in the country as "unfair".

The Swindon Borough Council has reportedly completed the first phase in its bold plan to install a wireless ( Wi-Fi ) broadband mesh covering the whole borough with free internet access. The project was first announced in November last year (here).
