Broadband provider Zen Internet has been awarded its 9th Which? Best Buy for Broadband award, topping the satisfaction tables for the 5th year running. Which? has also revealed that Zen is currently the only ISP to be awarded the Best Buy broadband provider status.

Two lords for the Liberal Democrat party (Lord Razzall and Lord Clement-Jones) have proposed new amendments to the Government's endlessly controversial Digital Economy Bill that would force UK broadband ISPs into blocking any website deemed to contain "a substantial proportion of [CONTENT]" that infringes copyright.

The boss of BT Openreach, which is responsible for ensuring that all rival ISPs have equality of access to BT's local UK network, has claimed that its fibre optic based up to 40Mbps FTTC broadband technology "can achieve peak information rates of 100Mbits/sec". He also warned that demand for peak data rates of 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), as touted by its rival Fibrecity ( i3 Group ) in Bournemouth, will eventually surface but probably not for "a long time" yet.

The UK Governments Minister for Digital Britain, Stephen Timms, has announced plans to get 7.5 million new internet users online by March 2014. This equates to a 60% target reduction in the 12.5 million people who are not currently online in the UK.

Several members of the House of Lords have tabled a new amendment to the UK Digital Economy Bill that would require Ofcom to establish a standard scheme for dealing with broadband complaints, faults and requests. The move could result in a much needed replacement to the controversial SFI system used by BT .

The European Commission (EC) has, following several concessions by the joint company, cleared the proposed merger between Orange UK and T-Mobile UK. Perhaps the most important move was to divest 15MHz of the 60MHz held by both parties in the key 1800MHz spectrum band, which is critical for future superfast LTE Mobile Broadband services.

Comparison site Broadband.co.uk has released its latest anecdotal monthly broadband speed testing results for February 2010. It shows that the average UK download speed for the largest ten ISPs has leapt from just 4.275Mbps in January 2010 to 4.659Mbps now.

UK ISP Aquiss has put out a "final call" on their promotion that offers new subscribers 2 Months FREE broadband access across the providers Premium (up to 24Mbps) product range. Premium range prices start at £21.95 per month but offer an "unlimited" monthly usage allowance and short 1 month contract term.

Kingston Communications UK ( Karoo ), a provider of telecommunications services to the Hull and the East Riding region of Yorkshire, has called for greater transparency of broadband ISP speeds. The provider claims to have done its part by launching a visual ‘Speed Map’ for every postcode within its coverage, which was created by measuring the performance of every active Karoo home broadband connection.

New customers who take either of the O2 HOME Premium or Pro (up to 20Mbps) fixed line broadband packages will now also get £50 off their mobile phone bills. The new promotion is available to all O2 pay monthly, pay as you go (payg) or Mobile Broadband customers. This is in addition to the discounts that O2 already offers for existing mobile users.

The results from 561 respondents to our latest monthly survey have revealed that 74.3% do not support the Government's plan to introduce a 50p +vat per month tax ('Next Generation Fund') on all fixed phone lines. Revenue from the NGF (£175m per year) would be used to support the rollout of future broadband services to 90% of the country by 2017, with a focus on less profitable areas, such as rural locations.

Mobile operator O2 UK has introduced a revamped Mobile Broadband package for £10 per month, which comes with a 1GB usage allowance. The service can be brought with a FREE modem and 3 MONTHS FREE service on an 18 month contract or on a 1 month contract where there is no free service period and the modem costs £20. Unlimited Wi-Fi Hotspot access is available on both.

UK ISP O2 and Be Broadband (Telefónica) has released its latest results to the end of December 2009 (Q4), which saw their total broadband subscriber base climb from 527,126 to 591,514. Quarterly additions were a little lower than in Q3 but remain generally strong.

The UK Government's Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has strongly hinted that owners of free public Wi-Fi wireless networks and Hotspots, such as those found in restaurants, libraries, universities and shared between neighbours, will not be exempt from the Digital Economy Bill's measures to tackle Internet piracy.

Broadband provider TalkTalk has today confirmed that all of its 'up to' 8Mbps Essentials broadband and phone bundle customers will be given a FREE speed boost 'up to' 24Mbps. The provider will also be removing P2P (BitTorrent file sharing) traffic shaping for all Pro customers.

Mobile operator T-Mobile has joined rivals Virgin Media (here) and Orange (here) in reducing its mobile internet data roaming costs for those who want to keep surfing when outside of the UK. The operator also highlights new research from Omnibus, which found that 40% of customers would take their laptop on holiday with them if they could get connected to the internet easily.
