Residents and businesses of
Uttlesford in
Essex (UK) are celebrating this week after their district, which has a population of around 74,000 and is also home to
Stansted Airport, became the latest to benefit from superfast broadband internet access via Buzcom's
FibreWiFi ISP.
The local
Uttlesford District Council (UDC) notes that, outside of the main town, approximately
80% of the area is still classified as rural and suffers from either slow or no broadband connectivity at all. The council recently (March 2011) set out to resolve that problem by allocating a
£30k grant to help FibreWiFi rollout its wireless ( Wi-Fi ) broadband service in the region.
This week saw FibreWiFi's service finally go live with residents now able to benefit from symmetrical internet access speeds of up to
25Mbps at prices that start from
£12.25 a month. The platform could technically go much faster and is capable of delivering speeds approaching 350Mbps.
Cllr Susan Barker said:
"The council is very pleased to have been able to help Buzcom bring this service to the district. It should be of great benefit to many residents and business who have struggled until now with slow broadband speeds.
However, it is not just people who live in the rural parts of the district who can benefit from this as it is available in the larger towns and villages as well. I live in an area not served by traditional broadband and am delighted with the service I now receive from Buzcom."
FibreWiFi's service has also been introduced in the
Maldon district where 94% of people applying have been successfully connected. It now covers a significant area of the region just above east London.
